This Saturday, WWE’s Royal Rumble celebrates its 36th edition, an often underestimated chance to make some extra cash.

What is the Royal Rumble?

The Royal Rumble is a yearly event organized by World Wrestling Entertainment, in case you are not familiar with it.

The event features regular singles or tag team matches, but the main attraction is undeniably the “Royal Rumble” match.

During the Royal Rumble, a group of 30 contenders engage in fierce competition, with only one ultimately being declared the victor.

In a WWE event, a unique process called a “random draw” takes place. The first participant, selected through this draw, begins the match alongside the second participant. As time passes, typically ranging from 60 seconds to 2 minutes, the subsequent participants gradually enter the ring. This sequence continues until all 30 participants have joined the match.

The winner is determined in a wrestling match by eliminating competitors through throwing them over the top rope, causing both feet to touch the floor. Once 29 wrestlers have been eliminated, the last remaining participant is declared the victorious survivor.

Adding a women’s Royal Rumble in 2018 has effectively doubled the excitement of the event. With this addition, there is now twice the intrigue and twice the fun to be experienced.

How I’ve enjoyed the Royal Rumble

I participated in an entertaining game during the Royal Rumble. It involved a group of 30 individuals, including myself, participating in a pool. Each of us was randomly assigned a number, which corresponded to the wrestler who entered the ring at that specific moment. If the wrestler assigned to our number emerged victorious, we would also be declared winners.

In 2015, my Rumble number was No. 17, which turned out to be a pretty decent spot. Typically, the latter half of the Rumble is where the real drama unfolds. Unfortunately, up until that point, No. 17 had never emerged as the ultimate victor (I’m well aware of these statistics). However, that year, the anticipation leading up to No. 17 was more thrilling than ever before.

Kofi Kingston emerged, prompting me to unleash an audible expletive. It wasn’t a personal grudge against Kofi, but rather a reflection of WWE’s failure to acknowledge his exceptional talent at that particular moment. It became apparent that my chances of winning were non-existent.

Having attended the live event in 2016, I regretfully missed out on the pool. As the 2017 Royal Rumble began, I already had a sinking feeling that my chances were slim. Drawing No. 10 confirmed my suspicions, and I knew it was a lost cause. It was no surprise when Tye Dillinger, famously dubbed “The Perfect 10,” emerged as my designated participant. However, it quickly became apparent that his performance fell far short of perfection.

I came so close to winning in 2018. It was one of those rare occasions where I openly supported a participant, despite already knowing the outcome had been determined hours before.

I received No. 28 and Roman Reigns made his entrance. The WWE seemed determined to heavily promote Roman Reigns, making it quite likely for him to secure a victory.

As expected, Reigns and Shinsuke Nakamura were the final two contestants. As a fan, I personally rooted for Nakamura to emerge victorious. However, as someone who appreciates the thrill of winning, I couldn’t help but support Reigns.

Imagine my disappointment when Reigns was tossed out and Nakamura emerged victorious.

The sensation was akin to witnessing Aaron Rodgers deliver a victorious Hail Mary against the Detroit Lions.

I’m back in the game this year, ready to make some noise. I’ve secured No. 19 for the men’s rumble and No. 11 for the women’s. These numbers scream victory to me.
