In July 2018, a collaboration was revealed between MGM Resorts International and GVC Holdings, a UK-based online gambling company. This partnership resulted in the establishment of the BetMGM online gambling platform in the United States, offering a variety of options such as sports betting, online poker, and online casino through mobile applications and websites.

In essence, BetMGM, powered by GVC Holdings software, was launched in 2019 as a software deal.

Simultaneously, MGM also entered into a distinct agreement with Boyd Gaming, a regional casino operator, granting mutual market access for online and mobile sports betting, as well as online wagering products, in the 15 states where both companies are present.

In the end, the agreement provides BetMGM with further market opportunities via Boyd in Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, and potentially other states down the line.

In addition, MGM has established a partnership with Yahoo! Sports that enables the integration of the BetMGM sports betting online platform onto the Yahoo Sports website.

Additionally, MGM has established partnerships with the NBA, NHL, and MLB, solidifying its position as the official gaming partner for each of these prominent sports leagues.

Online and mobile sportsbook

In 2017, MGM Resorts International introduced its online and mobile sports betting product under the brand name playMGM in New Jersey.

With its inclusion, it swiftly became a constituent of the nation’s inaugural integrated gaming platform, enabling players to relish online poker, online casino games, and online sports betting through a solitary account.

In September 2019, the entire operation underwent a rebranding and became known as BetMGM. Since then, MGM has successfully introduced the product to various states that have legalized online sports betting, including Michigan.

MGM Grand Detroit history

In 1996, the proposal to establish three commercial casinos in Detroit was approved by Michigan voters. Subsequently, Michigan lawmakers swiftly passed the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act within a year, effectively legalizing the operation of these casinos.

On July 29, 1999, the temporary MGM Grand Detroit casino was inaugurated, with a cost of $235 million.

Located near Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit, the temporary residence resided within a refurbished Internal Revenue Service building. This establishment boasted an impressive two-story gaming space, offering a vast selection of 2,300 slot machines, video poker games, and 80 table games.

Permanent hotel and casino

In 2005, MGM received approval from the Michigan Gaming Control Board for their proposal to construct a permanent casino spanning 100,000 square feet, along with a 400-room hotel and an eight-story self-parking garage. This development would be located just blocks away from the John C. Lodge Freeway and Bagley Street. The estimated cost of this project was $800 million.

In 2005, the owners of the property, previously identified as MGM Mirage, faced a near-compulsion to sell.

After acquiring Mandalay Resort Group, which included the MotorCity Casino in Detroit, MGM Mirage faced a hurdle due to the Michigan gaming law that restricts ownership of multiple commercial casinos. Consequently, it was obliged to sell one of its properties. Eventually, MGM Mirage decided to relinquish its stake in the MotorCity Casino and sold it to Marian Ilitch, the billionaire owner of Little Caesars Pizza, for a hefty sum of $525 million.

To this day, the MGM Grand Detroit remains as the first and only hotel and casino in Detroit that was built entirely from scratch as a brand-new establishment. It opened its doors on October 2, 2007.

During that period, George Boyer, the President and COO of MGM Grand Detroit, expressed that it marked the dawn of a fresh era for Detroit, offering unprecedented amenities and accommodations that the city had yet to witness.

In 2019, Detroit’s highest grossing casino property retained its title by generating $623.5 million in revenue. This impressive amount accounted for 43% of the overall record revenue of $1.454 billion that all Detroit casinos collectively earned in the same year.

The original temporary MGM Grand Detroit casino was sold by MGM in 2010. The building was purchased by the city for $6.32 million and underwent renovations to become the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.
