DraftKings announced Tuesday it is collaborating with BetBlocker to ramp up responsible gaming awareness and access.

BetBlocker is a not-for-profit charity based in the United Kingdom. Its software allows gamblers to set restrictions on their gaming activities across all devices at no cost.

“BetBlocker’s contributions to safer play are commendable and DraftKings is pleased to team up with this enterprising and disruptive not-for-profit that is advancing responsible gaming in a comprehensive and consumer friendly way,” DraftKings Senior Director of Responsible Gaming Chrissy Thurmond said in a release. “We share BetBlocker’s vision that technology and innovation are critical to promoting safer play, and we extend a warm welcome to BetBlocker as they build their footprint in North America, following widespread success across the pond.”

What is BetBlocker?

BetBlocker’s free software covers thousands of gaming sites, not only in Michigan, but internationally. That includes unlicensed operators. While Michigan online sportsbooks and casinos offer tools that allow customers to set a range of limits on their own platforms, BetBlocker could cover all of them at once.

It can be downloaded anonymously without any personal data being stored, according to the joint release from BetBlocker and DraftKings.

Customers can use it to manage how long or in what capacity they choose to play. That includes having the ability to set restriction lengths of days, weeks, months or even years. Customers can also block off certain days of the week.

“BetBlocker is thrilled to have the support of sports betting and gaming industry giant, DraftKings, to extend our software outside of the U.K. and Europe, to players in the United State and Canada,” BetBlocker Chief of Safer Gambling Partnerships Pedro Romero said. “We’ve been impressed with DraftKings’ leadership in responsible gaming and we are grateful for their collaboration and financial support as we look to expand awareness of safer play technology. We encourage other operators to follow DraftKings’ example of going above and beyond what is required region by region, to ensure all players have the knowledge and tools to bet responsibly.”

DraftKings adding to responsible gaming initiatives

DraftKings is working to educate its customers on responsible gaming by fostering “safer play through technology, staff training, education and resources for consumers,” according to the release.

Its S.E.R.V.E.S. (Service, Equity, Responsible Gaming, Vitality, Entrepreneurship, and Sports) social responsibility program, is leading that effort.

The DraftKings MI sportsbook and casino app allows customers to set deposit, wager or time limits; “cool off” for as few as three days or as long as four weeks; and even self exclude for one year or five years.
