How do Stanley Cup futures work?

How do the NHL Playoffs work?

When the NHL’s regular season ends, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are held to determine the Stanley Cup champions.

The NHL playoffs generally include a tournament with four rounds of best-of-seven series featuring the top 16 teams in the regular-season standings.

This format includes the top four teams from each of the newly realigned divisions — Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific. The teams are seeded according to record. The top-seeded team faces the bottom seed, and the second and third seeds play each other in the first round. The two winners of the first round then play each other to advance to the semifinals. The four remaining teams are re-seeded according to their regular season records. Then will then face off, with the top seeds remaining facing the lowest seeds possible until a champion is crowned. This playoff format means that it is possible that two teams that traditionally play in the same conference may end up playing each other for the Stanley Cup.

In 2023, the playoffs will start in mid-April and conclude sometime in June.

The Detroit Red Wings: 11-time Stanley Cup champions

The Red Wings, now one of the league’s most valuable teams, were founded in 1926 and are one of the first six teams to start the NHL (thus that Original Six moniker). No United States-based team has won more Stanley Cup Championships.

The Red Wings have not won the Stanley Cup, however since the 2007-08 season. The team has fallen on hard times as of late, teetering near the bottom of the standings int he highly competitive Atlantic Division for the 2023 season.

The last time Detroit won the Stanley Cup, the Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games in the Stanley Cup Finals. Henrik Zetterberg scored the winning goal in Game 6 and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL Playoffs MVP. Zetterberg ended his NHL career in 2018 because of a back condition, but he remained under contract with the team until 2021.

Despite these recent frustrations, the franchise still has seen two golden eras: the 1950s and again in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Red Wings legend Gordie Howe led the team to four Stanley Cup Championships (1949–50, 1951–52, 1953–54, 1954–55) during his 26 seasons in Detroit.

Here’s a look at the top five players to put on a Detroit Red Wings jersey:

1. Gordie Howe

Howe played 25 of his 26 NHL seasons in a Detroit Red Wings uniform, winning four Stanley Cups; six Art Ross Trophies for leading the league in points; and six Hart Memorial Trophies as the NHL’s MVP.

“Mr. Hockey” retired as the NHL’s leading goal scorer (801), assists leader (1,049) and points leader (1,850) at the time. Wayne Gretzky has since broken these records, but Howe still holds the record for most games and seasons played.

Howe retired in 1971 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame the next year. He was also the first recipient of the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

2. Steve Yzerman

Yzerman played 22 seasons in Detroit, wearing the captain’s “C” for 19 of those years. During that time, he won three Stanley Cups; the Lester B. Pearson Award, now known as the Ted Lindsay Award, for Most Outstanding Player in the 1988–89 season; the Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1998; and the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward in 2000.

Yzerman scored a career-high 155 points, including 65 goals and 90 assists, during that 1988–89 season. Only NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have had better seasons.

His No. 19 jersey was retired by the Red Wings in 2007. Two years later, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Yzerman is now the general manager of the Red Wings.

3. Nicklas Lidström

Lidström played 20 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings. He was captain for the final six. Lidström won four Stanley Cup championships, including the 2007-08 title as the Red Wings’ captain.

Career highlights also include seven James Norris Memorial Trophies as the NHL’s top defenseman and one Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2002.

Lidström was the first European captain of a Stanley Cup-winning team and the first European player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.

4. Sergei Fedorov

Fedorov won three Stanley Cups with Detroit, as well as the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP in 1994. He was the first European player to win the Hart Trophy. Fedorov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.

5. Pavel Datsyuk

Datsyuk played for the Red Wings for 15 years, winning two Stanley Cups.

Career highlights include three Frank J. Selke Trophy wins as the NHL’s top defensive forward and four consecutive Lady Byng Memorial Trophy wins for performance and sportsmanship.

Montreal has won more Stanley Cups than any other team in the NHL, including 10 more titles than any other team. The Canadiens were founded in 1909, making them the oldest professional hockey team in the world. The Canadiens are an Original Six NHL squad.

However, the team has enjoyed little to no success in the new millennium. The last Montreal Canadiens championship season was in 1992–93.

Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins: Five Stanley Cups

Longshots winning, or at least getting to the Stanley Cup Finals, has become a regular occurrence in the NHL. Here’s a look at five recent NHL Stanley Cup longshots who have managed to shock the hockey world:

1. St. Louis Blues: 2018-19

A year after the Las Vegas Golden Knights played Stanley Cup Cinderella, it was the St. Louis Blues‘ turn. This time, the glass slipper fit.

The Blues won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history, even though they were in the last place in the league as late as January 2019 and 250-1 longshots to win the title at the time.

The team rallied to make the NHL Playoffs, won two Game 7s in the process to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals, and beat the Boston Bruins in seven games.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins: 2015-16

Having fired their coach a third of the way into the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins were 14-1 longshots to win the Stanley Cup at the start of the NHL Playoffs in 2016.

The team still managed to earn the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, but that meant a matchup against the New York Rangers, the team that had knocked them out of the NHL Playoffs the past two seasons. They beat the Rangers in five games, a Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington Capitals team in six games, and then survived a Game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals to move on to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Penguins beat the San Jose Sharks in six to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup. They repeated the next year, but their odds were significantly lower.

3. Los Angeles Kings: 2011-12

The 2011–12 Los Angeles Kings were the eighth seed in the Western Conference Playoffs and 17-1 longshots to win the Stanley Cup.

However, the team captured its first Stanley Cup Championship beating the Conference’s first, second and third seeds before handling the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Kings only lost four games the whole playoffs, including two in the Stanley Cup Finals.

4. Boston Bruins: 2010-11

A year before Los Angeles’ surprise, the Boston Bruins broke a drought as the third seed in the Eastern Conference and 17-1 longshots to win the Stanley Cup.

The Bruins beat longtime rival and sixth-seeded Montreal in the first round, even after losing the first two games at home. They won the series in overtime in Game 7 before sweeping the second-seeded Philadelphia Flyers.

The Bruins won the Eastern Conference Finals in seven games over the Tampa Bay Lightning and faced a Presidents’ Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks team in the Stanley Cup finals.

Vancouver went up 2–0, but Boston won two games, lost game five, and forced a Game 7 with a Game 6 win. Finally, the Bruins ended a 39-year Stanley Cup drought by winning Game 7 4-0.

The biggest upsets in NHL playoff history

2011-12 Kings-Canucks

The 2011-12 Vancouver Canucks were serious contenders to win the Stanley Cup. The team won its second consecutive Presidents’ Trophy on the final day of the regular season and started the NHL Playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

They won just one of five games against the Los Angeles Kings, however, and were bounced out of the first round of the playoffs in what was considered a huge upset at the time. The Kings went on to win the Stanley Cup as a huge longshot.

2009-2010 Canadiens-Capitals

The 2009-2010 Washington Capitals were an offensive juggernaut that won the President’s Trophy. The Canadiens barely qualified for the NHL Playoffs.

However, Montreal won Game 1 and almost won Game 2. The Capitals made it three in a row and 3-1 in the series by winning both games in Montreal, but the Canadiens survived Games 5 and 6. Then, Montreal became the first No. 8 seed to come back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat a No. 1 seed by winning Game 7 in Washington.

The Canadiens also beat defending champion Pittsburgh and superstar Sidney Crosby in seven games, but the Cinderella story ended with an Eastern Conference finals loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

2002-03 Wild-Avalanche

The 2002-03 Colorado Avalanche was a team full of stars — Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Adam Foote, and Patrick Roy. The No. 6-seeded Wild team they would face in the first round was full of unsung heroes, given the expansion franchise was making its first playoff appearance.

The Wild took Game 1, but it was 3-1 Avalanche before they would respond to take the series in a Game 7 overtime thriller.

1981-82 Kings-Oilers

The Oilers had only lost 17 games heading into the NHL Playoffs thi particular season. The Kings were a sub-.500 team.

Consider that the Oilers also had peak-Wayne Gretzky with 212 points (Oilers: Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr). The Kings had Marcel Dionne and not much else.

The teams split the first two games before The Miracle on Manchester happened.

At their home rink on Manchester Boulevard, the Kings were down 5-0 late in the second period of Game 3.

They scored three goals to get within two, and cut the lead to one after the Oilers took a five-minute major in the third period. The Kings later tied the game with five seconds left and won it in overtime.

The game marked the largest comeback in NHL Playoff history, and the Kings used the momentum from it to eliminate the Oilers in Game 4.

2005-06 Oilers-Red Wings

The Oilers dominated the 1980s, but unfortunately for that franchise, not much else. By the time the 2005-06 season rolled around, the team hadn’t won a playoff series in eight years.

The Red Wings had the best regular-season record in the league and a roster full of legends including Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan and Chris Chelios.

The No. 8-seeded Oilers weren’t bad, but they weren’t legends. The teams split the first four games, and goalie Dwayne Roloson backstopped the Oilers to a surprise Game 5 win.

The Oilers got down 2-0 in Game 6 but tied it up. The Wings went ahead 3-2, but the Oilers tied it again and went on to win it with just over a minute left in regulation.

Consequently, it was Yzerman’s last game. Meanwhile, the Oilers went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals but lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games.
