NFL playoffs betting: Full divisional weekend schedule ahead

The NFL returns to its normal playoff schedule this week with a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday.

Four teams remain alive in the AFC and NFC, respectively. Bids to the conference championships are up for grabs this weekend.

Here’s the full schedule and latest BetMGM odds for the four games, as of Wednesday afternoon.

Saturday’s games:

  • 4:30 p.m. on CBS: Cincinnati Bengals (+150) at Tennessee Titans (-175)
  • 8:15 p.m. on FOX: San Francisco 49ers (+195) at Green Bay Packers (-250)

Sunday’s games:

  • 3 p.m. on NBC: Los Angeles Rams (+125) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-150)
  • 6:30 p.m. on CBS: Buffalo Bills (+105) at Kansas City Chiefs (-125)

Stafford vs. Brady highlights weekend

The state of Michigan will have a lot of interest in Sunday’s 3 p.m. game between the Rams and Bucs.

That matchup features Michigan alum Tom Brady up against former Detroit Lion, Matthew Stafford.

Though Stafford is getting sentimental support from Lions fans, a Rams’ loss would give the Lions better NFL Draft stock. The Lions own the Rams’ first-round draft pick this year as part of the Stafford trade last offseason.

BetMGM was listing the Bucs as a 3-point home favorite against the Rams. The over/under is currently listed at 48.5 points.

The Bucs are coming off a 31-15 win against the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday. Brady threw for 271 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Stafford earned his first playoff victory in a 34-11 win against the Arizona Cardinals this past Monday. He threw for 202 yards and two scores on 13 of 17 passing.

Brady certainly has the experience edge in the matchup. The seven-time Super Bowl winner has 35 postseason wins in his career to Stafford’s one.

Stafford and the Rams did earn a 34-24 win over Brady and the Bucs in Los Angeles back on Sept. 26 of this season.

Michigan Online Gambling One Year Anniversary Sports Betting

It’s hard to believe, but we are approaching the 1-year anniversary of online sportsbooks and online casinos in Michigan.

The date was Jan. 22, 2021 when a major step was taken in Michigan’s sports betting and casino industry. Saturday makes a year since 10 apps went live in Michigan.

Over the last 12 months we have seen a lot happen, paving the way for exciting things to come in the second 12 months.

Here’s a look at five marquee moments during the first year of the online product, and what to look forward to in its next stages.

Jan. 22, 2021 – Online sportsbooks & casinos launch

While the first physical sportsbooks launched in Detroit on March 11, 2020, it would be nearly a year later that online and mobile access was granted.

Ten online sportsbooks and eight online casinos took part in the initial launch ahead of a big sports weekend. Included in the opening weekend was the AFC/NFC Championships and Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier in the UFC.

The launch was a success from the beginning, as Michigan combined with launching Virginia to account for 7.5 million online transactions. Those transactions came from more than 400,000 accounts. Players took advantage of numerous new-user account bonuses, many signing up for a handful of operators.

It was only just the beginning of a successful year.

Looking ahead: Michigan now has 14 active online sportsbooks to utilize. A 15th is on the way with Soaring Eagle Casino set to launch Ascend Sportsbook on-site in the near future and Eagle Casino & Sports online. The same goes for online casinos, with 14 currently active and Soaring Eagle next to join the mix.

Jan. 29, 2021 – PokerStars MI launches

The next big step in the online gambling industry was online poker launching on Jan. 29.

PokerStars MI was the first site to launch in Michigan, one week after online casinos and sportsbooks launched.

Michigan became the fifth state to allow real money poker games. Michigan joined Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In its first week, the Great Lakes State led the nation with nearly 1,100 seats filled on PokerStars.

BetMGM Poker would be next to follow, launching on March 22, 2021. Michigan was just the second state with BetMGM Poker, joining New Jersey.

Looking ahead: The big question remains when interstate compacting will take place in the state. That will allow Michiganders to play head-to-head against players in other states.

Projections were for a 2021 launch of World Series of Poker in Michigan, but here we are into 2022 and nothing has happened. The launch of WSOP, along with Michigan joining the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement will lead to interstate compacting.

Michigan appears ready to join but is awaiting approval from the other states to give the thumbs up.

Once WSOP is launched in the state, Online Bracelet Series events are sure to draw a lot of attention for in-state poker players.

Feb. 15, 2021 – First tribal online casino & sportsbook launches

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians would be the first to get into online sports betting and casinos in February.

Four Winds Casinos joined the mix, partnering with Kambi to be the first of three self-branding tribal operators to launch during 2021. Four Winds operates casinos in Dowagiac, Hartford and New Buffalo.

Through November, Four Winds raised $19.2 million in online casino revenue. It also took in more than $4.8 million in online sports bets.

Since Feb. 15, both FireKeepers Casino and Play Gun Lake have joined the mix as tribal operators to launch online sportsbooks & casinos.

Looking Ahead: As we noted, Soaring Eagle is in the works to join the party as well. That will give Michiganders plenty of options around the state.

These developments are significant for Michigan bettors.

But there’s also a larger picture here for how tribes view their slice of the online gambling pie. Many states will be looking to learn from the relationship here between tribes, operators and state governments.

July 22, 2021 – Evolution provides live dealer games

Another major milestone in the last year came in July. It would be the launch of live dealer online casino games.

The new addition launched on July 22 through Evolution, which was approved by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Blackjack, baccarat and roulette could be played from home with a live dealer running the game from a studio in Southfield.

This step was big in attracting players that still sought a form of social interaction while playing. It also provided more transparency for players that were maybe suspicious of an AI dealer.

Following the launch, Michigan’s internet gaming sector increased its revenue by 3.5% to $92.3 million in July.

Now, 11 different casinos have live dealer casino games available for users, many of the operators offering branded tables and more interaction within the same platform.

Looking Ahead: Evolution no longer has a monopoly in Michigan, as Playtech launched live casino products with PlayGunLake. One block in Southfield probably added more gaming jobs than any other area in Michigan in 2021. How will the neighbors co-exist in 2022?

October 2021 – Record Revenue Month

Throughout 2021, we saw big revenue numbers come from the online gambling industry, particularly online casinos.

None were bigger than what we saw in the month of October (though we’re still waiting for December’s haul).

The 14 operators set a record by raising $109.7 million in revenue for the month.

BetMGM has been leading the way throughout the year. It produced $41.38 million in revenue for October.

Without December numbers available yet, it’s safe to assume that Michigan will end the year with four consecutive months of revenue in nine figures.

Looking Ahead: It’s understandable that the first year would see a big boost in revenue, but can Michigan continue the trend?

The big swing didn’t start until April of 2021, but Michigan will pass $1 billion in online gambling revenue in less than a year. That’s compared to $257.4 million in online sports betting revenue through November, and less than $100 million in taxable revenue after operators write-off promotions. Take note other states: It’s easy to see where the true online gambling money comes from.

With COVID-19 spread still rampant, it could force many gamblers to remain online and at home for the time being. Also, with continued advancements in casino games and poker, Michigan still has a lot of growth ahead.

NFL playoffs Michigan sportsbooks promotions

Time to get wild. The NFL postseason kicks off Saturday with its slate of Wild Card games. The 3-13-1 season for the Detroit Lions, while entertaining, didn’t earn a berth.

But Lions fans have already won: They can ride that last-game glow until draft day AND choose a team or three to root for until September comes. Or at least until February. Who could ask for anything more?

If we learned anything in Week 18, it’s that there’s no such thing as a sure thing this season. With a month to go until Super Bowl LVI kicks off Feb. 13 in Los Angeles, we’re here to help. Read on for recent NFL betting promos in Michigan and a few ideas for teams to wager on.

Michigan sportsbooks using playoffs for promotion season

Here are some offers available now, though most are for new customers requiring fresh accounts and initial deposits. Expect more NFL-specific bets to come into play as the playoffs progress.

BetMGM Sportsbook: Bet $25 for each game, get $50 for MNF

For the first time, the NFL playoffs will be on Monday Night Football.

BetMGM Sportsbook is rewarding loyal customers this weekend with a free $50 bet for it.

The book is offering a free $50 bet for the Rams/Cardinals game if you bet $25 on any market for each of the weekend’s first five playoff games.

As always, check out the Ts&Cs and this requires an opt-in too.

DraftKings Sportsbook: Hammer the Over on Bills/Patriots

At DraftKings Sportsbook, a new-user promotion gives players a chance to win $280 in free bets on a $5 pre-game moneyline bet. The winnings are paid out in seven $40 free bets that must be used within seven days.

There’s also a Hammer the Over promotion for the New England vs. Buffalo game where every 5,000 bettors that take advantage and bet the over will win a -110 bet. We have found the maximum value of the bet fluctuates throughout the country, but you should take what you can get there.

Packers, Chiefs situated as Super Bowl favorites

Oddsmakers are calling the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs the Super Bowl favorites. But here is a look at Michigan-friendly teams that have either some emotional pull, or the best shot to move on this week and possibly win it all.

NFC teams to ponder as the NFL playoffs open

Remember when the Super Bowl favorites lost to the Lions, 37-30, in entertaining fashion during Week 18? Sure, the long-haired starting slinger sat half the game, but his team lost. To spare the collective mental health of Michigan readers and preserve that memory, then, we have nothing else to say about the 13-4 Packers until they take on either the Bucs or the Eagles in Round 2.

(OK, but they’re the favorites so people would understand if one chose that wagering route).

Another Decent Bet: No. 2 seed Tampa Bay Bucs (13-4)

We should not have to explain this pick, but Tom Brady. You know, the Michigan man with a decent ring collection. Brady and his No. 2-seed Bucs face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at home.

Despite injuries and Antonio Brown, the Bucs are +450 to win it all at FanDuel.  Injuries have plagued both sides of the ball for Tampa Bay, including losing Chris Godwin for the season. Coach Bruce Arians said he expects running back Leonard Fournette and outside linebackers Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul to play Sunday, so that helps.

A Legit Threat: No. 4 seed Los Angeles Rams (12-5)

We should also not have to explain this pick, but Matthew Stafford. Our friend Stafford has struggled with interceptions this season and now will nurse a toe injury suffered in the 27-24 OT season finale loss to the Niners.

Coach Sean McVay, however, said he expects Stafford to play against the No. 5 seed Arizona Cardinals (11-6) during Monday Night Football. Michiganders know Stafford can stay strong, and Los Angeles bounced back from a mid-season slump by winning five of its last six games. The teams traded road victories against each other this year. The Rams were favored Wednesday by 3.5 points at DraftKings and 10-to-1 odds to win the Super Bowl in their home stadium.

Longshot: No. 6 seed San Francisco 49ers (10-7)

Well, if you liked our previous pick than you probably didn’t pull for the Niners to win last week against Stafford and Co. And maybe don’t want to pull for them now, but their scrappy style must not be ignored. Besides, at least it was former Michigan player Ambry Thomas who intercepted Stafford to end the game. The Niners face tough competition in the No. 3-seeded Cowboys (12-5) in Dallas.

San Francisco won four of its last five. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played through a thumb injury and still completed more than 70 percent of his throws for the third straight game. Detroiters celebrate that kind of tough so rooting for San Fran feels OK, plus they have seven players on the roster who played college ball here. The Niners are 3-point underdogs against the Cowboys at DraftKings and have 20-to-1 odds to win the Lombardi.

AFC teams to ponder as the NFL playoffs open

Like the Packers, the No. 1-seeded Tennessee Titans (12-5) will enjoy a bye week to open their third consecutive postseason trip. The Titans have home-field advantage throughout the AFC and will next host either the Chiefs or Pittsburgh Steelers in Round 2. With odds ranging from +750 to +850 at Michigan sportsbooks, the Titans would make a strong Super Bowl bet – especially if the stiff-arming Derrick Henry returns from his foot injury in time.

Another Decent Bet: No. 2 seed Kansas City Chiefs (12-5)

Kansas City started the season on a sputter, dropping four of its first seven games, before going on a tear after losing in Nashville in Week 7. They almost swept the rest of the schedule, until Joe Burrow and the Bengals snatched a late win in Week 17. A Chiefs’ wager feels like a good gamble, plus former Michigan man Chad Henne still backs up Patrick Mahomes.

In addition to being everyone’s favorite State Farm actor (besides Jake, of course), Mahomes continues to dominate. It almost seems like a no-brainer that the Chiefs will defeat the Steelers in Kansas City for the second time this season. Almost. But as we told you before, “…never count out a team led by head coach Mike Tomlin.”

That said, the Chiefs were 12.5-point favorites over the Steelers at BetMGM Sportsbook and this close behind the Packers as favorites to win the Super Bowl.

A Legit Threat: No. 4 Cincinnati Bengals (10-7)

While Cincinnati has historically have seen more postseason action than the Lions, a Bengals playoff run could evoke the same level of excitement that will occur when Detroit wins the Super Bowl in 2023. Cincinnati had five straight losing seasons from 2016 to 2021 and owns the longest active playoff-win-drought in the league, dating back to 1990. (Yes, of course it’s the Lions that have the second-longest streak from 1991).

Rooting for the Ohioans also makes sense in the wagering world because here in 2022, the Bengals have a legitimate shot.

Burrow has led his team to a division title AND a victory against the Chiefs in Week 17. The Bengals host the Las Vegas Raiders, who will either feel energized or tired after starring in Sunday night’s instant classic against the Chargers. The Bengals are a 5.5-point favorite for Saturday’s postseason opener.

Longshot: No. 7 seed Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7-1)

The Steelers have not looked great this season, but still delivered a winning record for the 15th consecutive season under coach Mike Tomlin.

Ben Roethlisberger has struggled all season, even in the team’s recent victories. But sometimes football games come down to the things we can’t measure. Everyone knows this is likely it for the 39-year-old quarterback. Maybe he musters up one last gutsy showing in Kansas City. Maybe Tomlin will out-prepare Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Either way, victory is not guaranteed for the Chiefs, even if it looks that way on paper.

So, for those who don’t want to take the favorites, we humbly present our fellow gritty city pals for your longshot bet. The Steelers are 12.5-point underdogs with odds ranging from 60-to-1 to 90-to-1 to win the Super Bowl.

How to opt in to Golden Nugget’s $10 Million Wagering Race

Golen Nugget is awarding monthly prizes and year-end grand prizes based on accrued points. The more Golden Points you earn by making casino wagers, the higher you will place on the leader board.

Players have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Jan. 31 to earn points for January. Participants must opt-in every month at My Bonuses for that month’s points to count toward the year-long tally. No sportsbook wagers of any kind count toward point totals and no prizes may be used toward sports wagers.

Entering is easy:

  • Players need a valid, active Golden Nugget account to opt-in
  • Make a deposit of $20 or more
  • Earn at least 50 Leaderboard Points from cash wagers or casino wager during the promo period

Player rankings get updated daily on the leaderboard that shows monthly and cumulative totals. Leaderboard point awards will double from July through September, and triple from October through December.

  • A $100 wager on slot games earns 5 Leaderboard Points
  • A $100 wager on table games such as blackjack, roulette and video poker earns 1 Leaderboard Point

The free-play bonus carries a 1x wagering requirement before you can withdraw. That’s pretty good for the industry, which sometimes forces players to play their winning “bonuses” many times before it converts to real money.

Michigan and New Jersey bettors qualify for boost

The top 2,000 bettors from Michigan and New Jersey who have already opted-in to the contest are eligible to win the Monthly Fuel Up 2022 promotion award of 50 free spins and a 100% deposit match up to $25.

Winners must claim free spins and bonuses via My Bonuses with a single deposit. After accepting the prize, players have seven days to use on eligible games. Free spins will get awarded by 5 p.m. each month of 2022 on: Jan. 12, Feb. 16, March 16, April 13, May 18, June 15, July 13, Aug. 17, Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 16 and Dec. 14.

January’s race boasts $75K top prize

Prizes and awards change each month. For January, 2,000 winners will win $500,000 in Free Play Bonus Awards. Folks who finish in the top 100 spots will win at least $1,000.

The lucky leader of the month snags the grand monthly prize of $75,000; second place wins $50,000 and third place earns $35,000. Folks who rank in the bottom 500 spots win $10 each.

Rolls Royce is grand prize for year-end finale

When the contest concludes just before midnight on Jan. 31, the top 250 leaders in cumulative point totals will earn prizes. Remember, players must opt-in each month in order for accrued points to count toward the year-end total.

Winners in the top 10 can choose to accept stated prizes or free-play bonuses awarded monthly in 2023. Eleventh place through 25th place winners earn awards distributed monthly in 2023.

  • Grand prize is a 2022 Rolls Royce Cullinan valued at $395K or $240,000 free-play bonus awarded in $20,000 monthly installments
  • Second prize is a luxury jewelry package valued at $125K or $120,000 free-play bonus awarded in monthly installments of $10,000
  • Third prize is a Wild Watercraft Adventure valued at $62K or $60,000 free-play bonus awarded in monthly installments of $5,000

Golden Nugget primarily a casino brand

Golden Nugget earned $44.4 million online casino revenue from Michigan customers through November, fifth-most in the market. Contrast that with sports betting, where GN sits 11th in lifetime MI handle with less than $9 million in bets.

Golden Nugget is directed by Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.

Dan Gilbert, the owner of Jack Entertainment, found a couple of buyers for Greektown Casino-Hotel in Detroit, Michigan. The two buyers, Penn National Gaming and Vici Properties, have agreed to purchase the property in a deal valued at $1 billion.

Rumors of Gilbert trying to sell the casino began a few months ago. In reality, Gilbert entered into discussions with Penn National and Vici Properties about nine months ago.

Gilbert told the Detroit Free Press that he expects the deal to close in 2019. Obtaining approval from the Michigan Gaming Control Board should not pose any problems, even though there are “significant regulatory hurdles.”

About Greektown Casino

Greektown Casino-Hotel has 400 hotel rooms, a 100,000-square-foot gaming floor and 1,800 employees.

Gilbert acquired the casino in 2013 for approximately $600 million. Since the purchase, he has invested millions more in renovations and property improvements.

The casino mostly finds itself coming in third place in gaming revenue behind Detroit’s other commercial casinos: MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino Hotel.

Greektown brought in gaming revenue of $27 million in September and commanded 23 percent of the market. Additionally, the property earns substantial revenue from its three restaurants, three bars and five quick-serve food locations.

John Payne, president and chief operating officer of VICI Properties, spoke about the value of Greektown in a press release from the company announcing the deal.

“As the only casino located in Detroit’s historic Central Business District, Greektown, and its 30-story hotel tower, are ideally situated. Downtown Detroit is benefiting tremendously from billions of dollars of investment across the residential, commercial, entertainment and cultural infrastructure.

“The eight-acre property benefits from being in close proximity to the world-class sporting and entertainment venues, which are home to Detroit’s four major sports teams, as well as iconic locations, such as GM’s Renaissance Center and the Cobo Center.”

When the sale is complete, Vici Properties will lease the property to Penn National. The lease is for 15 years and $55.6 million.

Gilbert mentioned Penn National will keep the current employees at a similar compensation they are receiving now.

“Penn had been interested in the Greektown casino for years on and off,” Matt Cullen, CEO of Jack Entertainment, said to Crain’s Detroit Business. “We felt like we accomplished much of what we wanted to accomplish. We got a good price.”

Gilbert investing in Detroit

Gilbert was not only born in Detroit, but he stayed in the Wolverine State through college, including Wayne State University Law School in Midtown Detroit. He currently lives in Franklin about 30 minutes outside of the city.

Gilbert talked about his motivation behind Greektown’s purchase.

“We bought it as a defensive play more than anything else. Two and a half years before we bought it, it came out of bankruptcy under the bondholders, and they weren’t running it well. It would have been very bad for downtown if Greektown went under. If this thing was in the outskirts or in the suburbs, we wouldn’t have purchased it. We wanted good things to happen downtown, so we went ahead and purchased it. But (the casino) is probably a business that’s fully valued right now.”

Now that Gilbert has an extra billion dollars in his pocket, the rumor mill is at it again. Those speculating believe Gilbert has an interest in buying the Detroit Tigers.

Gilbert already owns one professional sports team, the NBA’s Cleveland CavaliersMajor League Baseball rules, however, prohibit him from owning the Tigers because his company owns other casinos. Cullen emphasized that the selling of Greektown to clear the way to purchase the Tigers “just isn’t accurate.”

Specifically, Gilbert plans to use some of the proceeds to invest it back into his favorite city, Detroit.

“We’re going to focus on business development and technology, the start-up scene in Detroit and things like StockX and other exciting businesses that will create jobs and excitement and attract people to the city from all over.”

Ravens Lions Injuries September 2021

When it comes to this year’s football schedule, the NFL didn’t do the Detroit Lions any early favors. The same story holds for a Week 3 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

Following a rough 35-17 loss on Monday night to the Green Bay Packers, Detroit is on a short week as it is set to face the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens had one of the biggest wins of Week 2 against the two-time defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs and will look to ride that momentum against the struggling Lions.

Can a banged-up Detroit compete at home this Sunday?

Baltimore Ravens at Detroit Lions: NFL Week 3 Odds

Lions once again a big underdog

For the third time in three games, Detroit finds itself as more than a 1-score underdog heading into the weekend.

As of early Wednesday evening, the Lions are a 9-point underdog at home against the Ravens, which is actually their lowest spread of the season thus far if it holds.

Both teams actually come into the game at 1-1 against the spread this season, while over the over has hit in all contests involving the teams.

These two franchises have only met five times, with the Ravens winning four of the five meetings. Baltimore has won and covered in the past three encounters. The last meeting was in 2017, a 44-20 win at home for the Ravens.

How to watch: Baltimore Ravens at Detroit Lions

  • What: Baltimore Ravens (1-1) at Detroit Lions (0-2)
  • When: 1 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Ford Field, Detroit
  • TV: CBS (Announcers: Greg Gumbel, Adam Archuleta, AJ Ross)
  • Radio: 97.1 FM in Detroit (Announcers: Dan Miller, Lomas Brown, T.J. Lang)
  • Satellite Radio:  SiriusXM Channel 226 (Lions); SiriusXM Channel 384 (Ravens)

Packers pull away in second half

It looked as if the Lions might actually shock the world on Monday night, as they held a 17-14 lead over Green Bay at halftime. Then the second half happened.

The Pack outscored Detroit 21-0 in the final two quarters and cruised to a cover.

Green Bay actually had fewer yards (323-344), but still looked like it could do what it wanted to the Detroit defense.

The Packers only punted once as Aaron Rodgers diced up the beat-up Detroit secondary. He was 22 of 25 passing for 255 yards and four scores. Running back Aaron Jones was a handful, scoring four times in the game, including three times by reception.

Already without Jeff Okudah for the rest of the season because of an Achilles injury, the Lions lost rookie corner Ifeatu Melifonwu (pictured at top) indefinitely with a quad injury. He was placed on the IR on Wednesday.

Jared Goff looked solid in the first half of Monday’s game, but then had two turnovers in the second half and couldn’t muster anymore offensive magic. He finished 26 of 36 passing for 246 yards with two scores.

Goff was also the leading rusher with 46 yards, while the team finished with 108.

One positive for Detroit has been rookie tackle Penei Sewell. He has yet to allow a sack through two starts at left tackle. With Taylor Decker out because of a finger injury, the Lions have an issue to address upon his return. Sewell struggled in the preseason at right tackle, but has been dominant at his collegiate position.

Injuries depleting already thin Lions roster vs. Ravens

The Lions couldn’t afford to be bitten by the injury bug in order to compete this year.

It appears they already have been swarmed.

Along with losing two starting corners, receiver Tyrell Williams remains in concussion protocol. He didn’t practice Wednesday.

Running back D’Andre Swift was limited in Wednesday’s practice with a groin injury that left him questionable for Monday’s game. Swift suited up and had eight carries for 37 yards while catching four passes for 41.

Defensively, Romeo Okwara (shoulder), Michael Brockers (shoulder) and Kevin Strong (concussion) were all also limited, while Trey Flowers (shoulder/knee) didn’t participate at all.

Linebacker Jaime Collins also sat out, but for non-injury reasons. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted out Wednesday that the Lions are looking to trade Collins.

This isn’t a good sign for a defense that already ranks 31st in the NFL in points allowed as it is set to face the NFL’s third-best offense in terms of production (443.5 ypg).

Lions tasked with containing Jackson

Baltimore has been in two nail-biters to start the 2021 season.

The Ravens suffered a 33-27 overtime loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1 before bouncing back with a thrilling 36-35 win over the Chiefs this past Sunday.

Typically strong defensively, the Ravens rank dead last in passing defense (376 ypg) and 31st in total defense (448 ypg) currently.

That puts a lot of pressure on Lamar Jackson, the former NFL MVP.

Jackson has been his usual entertaining self. He has thrown for 474 yards and two scores while rushing for a team-high 193 yards and two touchdowns.

One concern for the Ravens and Jackson is turnovers, as he has four through two games.

Like Detroit, Baltimore has had its unbalanced share of injuries. Standout corner Marcus Peters and second-year running back J.K. Dobbins were lost before the season. Backup running back Gus Edwards then suffered a knee injury before the season opener.

Rookie Ty’Son Williams has impressed in the backfield through two games. He has 142 yards on just 22 carries, also adding in 45 receiving yards on six catches.

Another injury to pay attention to is left tackle Ronnie Stanley. He did not practice on Wednesday because of an ankle injury. He missed all of last week with the injury, which he suffered against Las Vegas.

Sports betting and online casino coming?

Sports betting and online gambling may join the fray soon in Michigan.

Rep. Brandt Iden has been pushing his crown jewel, HB 4311, for what seems like an eternity.

The revised bill would institute a 9.25% tax on all games, including slots and set a $300,000 licensing fee for sports betting.

In March, Iden told Legal Sports Report, he continues to work with stakeholders to “get (sports betting) done.”

This could be the last time iGaming, and sports betting are sponsored by Iden as his term as a Michigan representative comes to an end in 2020 due to term limits.

There is also a separate sports betting bill, S 186, sponsored by Sen. Curtis Hertel floating around the state capital.

MotorCity Casino Hotel July 2021

Michigan sports bettors ended 2021 with a bang.

Detroit casinos reported their second-lowest net gain of 2021 from sports betting for the month of December, according to numbers reported Tuesday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, and one casino was beat by the bettors.

A reported $1.11 million in adjusted gross receipts was the lowest total since February of 2021. That was the lone month that saw Detroit sports bettors collectively beat the house.

MotorCity Casino actually took a loss of $100,408 from sports betting gross receipts at its FanDuel Sportsbook.

December’s fate for Michigan online sports bettors has not yet been disclosed by the MGCB. The Michigan online sports betting revenue report for December is expected next week.

Detroit retail sportsbooks at a glance

Greektown Casino led the downtown Detroit market in sports betting for December, accounting for 38.7% of the market share at $11.6 million in wagers. Greektown ended 2021 as the lone Detroit casino with positive sports betting revenue every month.

MotorCity Casino had $9.3 million in wagers for the month, making up 31.0% of the market share. Still, it had negative receipts for the second time in 2021.

MGM Grand Detroit finished with just under $9.1 million in wagers. That accounted for 30.2% of the market share. However, MGM had the highest revenue of the three for December at $631,703.

Altogether, $58,052 were raised in city of Detroit taxes for the month of December. That put the final tally of Detroit taxes raised at $1,26 million for 2021.

Licensee Retail Handle Revenue (GGR) Promos State Tax Local Tax
MGM Grand $9,088,087 $631,237 $466 $23,878 $29,185
MotorCity $9,335,280 -$100,408 $50,256 $0 $0
Greektown $11,648,575 $624,849 $0 $23,620 $28,868
Total $30,071,942 $1,155,678 $50,722 $47,498 $58,053

Second-lowest hold all-time

December’s hold (gross receipts divided by total handle) was the second-lowest total since sports betting launched at Detroit casinos in March 2020.

Aside from February of 2021, December’s produced a hold of 3.7% Here’s a look at the five-lowest holds since March of 2020.

  • Feb. 2021: -0.3%
  • Dec. 2021: 3.7%
  • April 2021: 6.3%
  • July 2021: 6.6%
  • Oct. 2021: 7.7%

The lowest hold of 2020 came in November at 9.3% The highest hold all-time for the state was in December 2020 at 19.4%.

Success on the gridiron likely played a role

The month of December was a strong one for football in the state of Michigan. That had sports bettors in the state coming up on the positive side of wagers.

“NBA, NFL and college football futures were favorable to the customers in December,” Kevin Hennessy of FanDuel Sportsbook told Playinmichigan. “Michigan’s Big Ten title game victory and its corresponding futures market were among the noteworthy local outcomes that favored our customers.”

Starting with college football, Michigan came through with its first Big Ten Championship in 17 years. On Dec. 4, the Wolverines defeated Iowa 42-3 to clinch the title.

Along with the single-game wagers, that kicked in a lot of futures wagers on U-M winning the conference title.

As we noted back in August, the Wolverines were coming into the season around +1700 to win the conference crown. Their odds to win the College Football Playoffs sat around +2000.

The Detroit Lions finished up the 2021-22 regular season on a high note as well. Detroit was 2-2 straight up and 3-1 against the spread for the month of December.

Lions Packers Week 18 odds Aaron Rodgers MVP

Forgive Detroit Lions fans for feeling like the longest regular season in NFL history felt even longer.

The team and its fans are finally reaching the end this Sunday, as the Lions were 3-point underdogs to open for the home finale against the Green Bay Packers.

With COVID-19 considerations and the Packers looming playoffs situation casting a shadow on the Week 18 matchup, there were some shifts in the line this week. By Tuesday morning, Michigan online sportsbooks even gave them a better shot, making the Lions just 2.5-point dogs. On Sunday as game time neared, it was back up to 3 or even 3.5 points at most books.

Green Bay has clinched home-field advantage and the first seed throughout the NFC playoffs, earning a first-round bye with a 13-3 record through 16 games.

The Lions meanwhile are careening toward the top of next year’s NFL Draft. Detroit is 2-13-1 and assured a selection among the top two. A Detroit loss and Jacksonville win at home against Indianapolis could get the Lions the No. 1 pick.

Detroit has actually fared very well against the spread

Detroit is 10-6 against the spread this season and has been underdogs in every game. However, a 2.5-point spread would tie the shortest line the Lions have faced all season, matching the spread from Thanksgiving against the Chicago Bears.

Sunday’s 1 p.m. EST game at Ford Field will be carried on FOX.

The consensus over/under for Sunday’s game is listed at 44.5 points at Michigan sportsbooks, while the best Lions moneyline odds Monday were +160 at PointsBet and BetRivers.

There were no posted lines over the summer for NFL Week 18 games because of the expected uncertainty. As game week opens, the picture really isn’t all that much clearer for this one.

Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions: NFL Week 18 Odds

Rookie WR Amon-Ra St. Brown stars as Lions sputter

There have been bright spots for the Lions as this rough rookie season for coach Dan Campbell has winded down.

Chief among them has been the play of rookie wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in the season’s closing weeks.

St. Brown had eight catches for 111 yards in last week’s 51-29 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. That’s five straight games with eight receptions or more for the USC product, an NFL rookie record. That streak also ties the great Calvin Johnson for the longest such streak in franchise history, a record Megatron set in 2012.

Another fantastic season for Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Fans might not get to see him for the Week 18 matchup, as resting for the playoffs could be in order.

Still, Lions fans have seen plenty of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers over the years.

Rodgers is the MVP favorite at FanDuel Michigan, sitting at -400 on Monday. Next up was Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady at +550.

Rodgers has tormented the Lions, going 18-5 as a starter outright against Detroit. However, as a Playinmichigan statistical analysis showed, he’s actually not as great against the spread, going 12-11 against the number vs. Detroit over the years.
