Teams will be playing a 10-week regular-season schedule followed by the postseason. For the inaugural season, all games are being held in Birmingham, AL, while the postseason will shift over to Canton, OH.
Who did the Panthers take in the 2024 USFL Draft?
As a new league, USFL teams were stocked with players at the first USFL Draft in 2024. There were 35 rounds with 280 players selected in total over two days. The draft was set up with fairness in mind as each of the rounds was designated for specific position groups.

Who is the head coach of the Panthers?
Mike Nolan is the head coach of the Michigan Panthers. He replaced former head coach Jeff Fisher—who stepped down for personal reasons—in February 2024. Nolan coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2005-2008. He has coached in various capacities for 11 NFL teams.
Nolan has coached at Stanford University, Rice University, and LSU. In 1987, he joined the Denver Broncos as a special teams coach. He became the Broncos’ linebackers coach in 1989. After a few years, he moved to the NY Giants in 1993 as a defensive coordinator.
In 1997, Nolan joined Washington as a defensive coordinator. In 2000, he was hired in the same position, this time bu the New York Jets. His next gig was with the Baltimore Ravens, where he served as wide receivers coach in 2011 and defensive coordinator from 2002 to 2005. He joined the 49ers in 2005. He was head coach of and general manager of the 49wers for three seasons before being fired. After that, he worked for the Broncos (again), Dolphins, and Falcons, all as defensive coordinator. The past few years brought him to the Chargers, Saints, and Cowboys before he was hired by the Panthers.
In short, Nolan has a lot of NFL experience. Whether that will translate to the USFL remains to be seen.

Spring football has been a tough nut to crack. The original USFL had some success in the 1980s, while the NFL had a developmental league in the 1990s that started as the WLAF and evolved into NFL Europe.
In recent times, the AAF and XFL started to play with much fanfare before ceasing operations, but the latter has plans to return in the future under new ownership. For now, the USFL has the spring pigskin spotlight to itself and high-profile exposure on the tube.
Were the original Panthers any good?
Yes, the original Panthers were a big factor for the first two years of the original USFL’s three-year run. The ‘83 team, led by QB Bobby Hebert and WR Anthony Carter, cruised to a 12-6 regular season record.
Michigan took down the Oakland Invaders in the divisional playoff round, and followed that up with a 24-22 victory over the Philadelphia Stars to win the first-ever USFL Championship. Hebert was MVP of the title tilt while throwing for 319 yards and three scores.
In 1984, the team ripped out of the gates at 6-0, but a four-game skid quickly brought the Panthers back down to earth. Hebert had another solid season behind center, but Carter was lost for the year to injury in Week 6.
Michigan would win just four more games after the hot start, wrapping up the year at 10-8. That was still good enough for a spot in the playoffs, but they were dropped by the Los Angeles Express in a triple-overtime thriller.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all roses and daisies behind the scenes. The club ran into some financial difficulties, culminating in a merger with the Oakland Invaders for the 1985 campaign, the last year of play for the original USFL.
