As Gov. Gretchen Whitmer deliberates on granting approval to three commercial casinos in Detroit, almost 23 tribal casinos in Michigan have already reopened or are preparing to do so in the near future.

On Friday, seventeen establishments were opened, while the rest, except for the Ojibwa Casinos in the Upper Peninsula, have announced their reopening dates.

The Marquette and Baraga casino locations of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will be the last among Michigan tribes to unveil their reopening plans.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan’s casinos had to be shut down by March 22, which unfortunately coincided with the launch of sports betting in Michigan’s three Detroit casinos on March 11.
