During this month’s Mural Sports Moments voting, Detroit sports enthusiasts are presented with a unique opportunity to select iconic moments from their beloved teams. These chosen moments will be transformed into captivating murals adorning the walls of the Michigan sports betting facility.
97.1 The Ticket, the state’s top sports radio station, is partnering with a local artist to create a mural for the FanDuel Sportsbook at Detroit’s MotorCity Casino. The mural will capture the victorious moments of the year and will be showcased later on.
Magglio’s game-winning home run in 2006? McCarty skillfully maneuvering past the Flyers in 1997? Vinnie’s incredible buzzer-beater with just 0.7 seconds left? Anything noteworthy related to the Detroit Lions?
Jeff Hoose, the midwest regional manager of FanDuel Group, stated that the passionate town and its numerous remarkable sports moments sparked a cause for debate. The overwhelming support and admiration from countless individuals, including our devoted customer base, inspired us to collaborate with a prominent station and contribute to the sports talk radio debate. This mural serves as our contribution to being an active participant in that discussion.
Kevin Hennessy of FanDuel suggests that the promotion could potentially be duplicated in additional markets.
How FanDuel’s Mural Sports Moments promotion works
You can now participate in the nomination process through the 97.1 website. Simply click on the provided link and scroll down to locate the submission form. Use this form to nominate your beloved moments related to the Detroit Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers.
The process will persist throughout this week.
Next week, 97.1 The Ticket will release Twitter polls for voting from Monday to Thursday to select the winners for each sport. From the submissions received, four finalists will be chosen for each team before ultimately determining the ultimate winner.
The voting schedule is as follows:
- On Monday, there will be a hockey game.
- On Tuesday, there will be a football game.
- Basketball on Wednesday.
- On Thursday, we will be playing baseball.
A Twitter poll will determine the chosen iconic moment on Friday, July 23. However, the mural will showcase all four sport-specific moments.
Strong candidates for best moments in Detroit sports history
Even though we are currently experiencing a lull in the city’s sports scene, the Detroit Mural Sports Moments project offers fans the opportunity to engage in passionate discussions and negotiations about memorable moments from the past.
These are the options available for each sport.
Detroit Tigers
Even though the Tigers have not clinched a World Series victory since 1984, numerous future Hall of Famers have contributed memorable moments to the team’s history.
While it is possible to delve into the franchise’s rich history for some of its greatest moments, it is important to take into account FanDuel’s sportsbook target audience.

The defining moment of the 2004 championship run is undoubtedly the Tayshaun Prince block on Reggie Miller during the Eastern Conference Finals.
Other plays by Ben Wallace also exemplify the essence of the Going to Work era in a similar manner.
Speaking of iconic moments, let’s not forget the incredible feat accomplished by Vinnie Johnson in 1990. With just 0.7 seconds left on the clock, he nailed a game-winning shot on enemy territory, solidifying the Bad Boys’ back-to-back championship victory.
I’m open to hearing about the locker room moments from the 1989 championship, where Isiah Thomas wore a wide smile while holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy, surrounded by his Bad Boys teammates.
However, I still prefer Vinnie.
Detroit Lions
Alright, brace yourself, because this is the most difficult one.
Consider these Barry Sanders highlights, especially since he was present at the inauguration of this specific sportsbook last year (although it’s worth noting that he is now part of the BetMGM team).
