For the third consecutive month, the amount of wagering in Michigan’s online sports betting handle in June was lower, indicating a decline in betting activity in the Great Lakes State.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board released data on Monday revealing that $235.1 million was bet on sports last month. This marks a decline in online sports betting handle in the state since the peak of $359.5 million wagered in March. In comparison to May’s $237.6 million wagered, the June handle dropped by 1.0%.
In June, sports enthusiasts enjoyed the NBA and NHL playoffs, U.S. Open golf, and the delightful news of the Detroit Pistons securing the top pick in the NBA Draft Lottery. In terms of the operator horse race, FanDuel Sportsbook remains at the forefront in Michigan, holding the top position with $77.3 million in sports bets, accounting for a 32.9% market share. DraftKings Sportsbook secured the second spot, with $56.5 million in bets (24.0% market share), followed by BetMGM Sportsbook in third place with $52.1 million in bets (22.2% market share).

In May, FanDuel held a market share of 30.0%. In June, it was among five operators that experienced a growth in handle, along with BetMGM, William Hill Sportsbook, WynnBET Sportsbook, and Four Winds Sportsbook.

Initially, the book performed well, securing a 23.9% market share during the first 10 days of wagering in January. However, its performance has steadily declined since then, with percentages dwindling to 13.3% in February, 11.0% in March, 9.9% in April, and 7.7% in May. In June, Barstool only managed to capture 7.1% of Michigan’s online sports bets.
Nearly $1.5 billion in Michigan online sports bets since January launch
Since its launch on January 22, residents of Michigan have placed wagers totaling almost $1.5 billion on sports using regulated wagering apps. Last week, FireKeepers Sportsbook became the 13th sports betting operator to enter the market. Interestingly, the book managed to generate some activity in June, with a total handle of $656. A representative from FireKeepers stated that the Michigan Gaming Control Board had granted approval for a soft launch of the book prior to its official rollout last week.
The June report on Michigan sports betting handle revealed a total gross revenue of $24.95 million for Michigan sportsbooks. From this, $927,575 was paid in state taxes, and $518,269 in city taxes and municipal service fees specifically for the city of Detroit. Although tax revenue earned by state tribal governments is not disclosed by the MGCB for sports betting, it was also generated.
In particular, it is worth mentioning that the revenue experienced a significant increase of 28.2% compared to the previous month’s figure of $19.46 million. June marked the most successful month for Michigan’s online sports bets, with operators retaining 10.5% of the bets placed. This is a notable improvement from the 8.0% retention rate observed since January.
