Before transitioning into a professional poker player and content creator, I had a longstanding curiosity about the earnings of professional poker players. While it’s evident that there isn’t a universal answer to this inquiry, I can provide you with a detailed account of my financial progress during the initial seven months of 2024.

I was thrilled to have earned $67,755 in 2021 through poker, especially considering that I only dedicated four months to playing full-time. For the remaining eight months, I managed to strike a balance between poker, content creation, and my full-time job unrelated to poker.

I’ve never been a big fan of setting specific financial targets, mainly because there are unpredictable factors that can influence outcomes in any given year. Nevertheless, if I were to establish a monetary goal, it would be to surpass my profit earnings from 2021.

We’re making progress towards achieving this mark in the first seven months of 2024, although the journey has been quite a wild ride.

When computing my annual earnings, I take into account all the funds I generate through poker playing. This encompasses the subsequent five classifications: cash games played online, online tournaments, cash games played in person, live tournaments, and rakeback.

This is my progress in each of those categories thus far in 2024.

Online Cash Games

My primary focus has been on Michigan online poker cash games, and it’s no surprise that this category has been my greatest source of winnings during the first seven months of 2024.

I am currently making a profit of $34,935 this year. Most of my earnings come from playing $2/$5 and $1/$2 blind cash games. However, I did try my luck at stepping up to $5/$10, but unfortunately, I lost a few buy-ins. As the years go by, I aim to keep challenging myself and strive to move up in the stakes of online cash games.

Online Tournaments

In 2024, I have decreased my participation in online tournaments compared to the previous year. I have only played a total of 82 tournaments so far. This is mainly because I have been prioritizing cash games, although I still find pleasure in joining tournaments whenever possible. As of now, my profit from online tournaments in 2024 stands at $2,475.

Live Cash Games

Although I have been primarily engaged in online poker this year, I managed to squeeze in some time for live games. To date, I have participated in a total of six live cash game sessions. While my record stands at three wins and three losses, the losses have outweighed the wins, resulting in a net loss of $1,061.

Live Tournaments

Even though I don’t participate in numerous live tournaments, I have a profound passion for playing them!

Playing in a live tournament exudes a unique energy and excitement that cannot be replicated in any other form of poker. Unfortunately, my performance in the eight tournaments I participated in this year has been lackluster. Out of those, I only managed to cash in one, earning a minimal return, while the rest resulted in no winnings, resulting in a total loss of $4,125 in live tournaments thus far in 2024.

Rakeback

Rakeback is the final category, referring to the online poker sites’ practice of giving money back to players. It can be likened to a rewards system for those unfamiliar with it.

As a frequent poker player like myself, the earnings from rakeback can be quite substantial. In the first seven months of 2024 alone, I have managed to accumulate an impressive sum of $10,105 through rakeback.

Total earnings

After summing up the amounts from these five categories, I have accumulated a profit of $42,329. It’s a decent start to 2024, but previously in early June, my profit had soared to over $58,000 before experiencing a significant financial decline in my poker career. The fluctuations in my online cash game results throughout this year demonstrate that poker can be a challenging journey, even for seasoned winners like myself.

Wishing all the best to everyone at the tables as we strive to conquer the final stretch of 2024!
