In August, DraftKings Sportsbook has emerged as the reigning champion among Michigan sports betting operators.

We went there, and we’re not sorry about it.

According to the latest data released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board on Thursday, DraftKings has surpassed FanDuel Sportsbook to claim the top position in Michigan for the first time. Since the launch of online sports betting in Michigan on January 22, FanDuel had consistently held the leading position each month prior to this.

In the previous month, DK accumulated a total of $61.4 million in online sports bets, securing a 31.9% market share out of the overall $192.3 million wagered online. This impressive performance surpassed FanDuel’s $47.7 million, which held a 24.8% share. BetMGM Sportsbook trailed behind in third place with $43.7 million, accounting for a 22.7% share. Notably, these three operators have established a significant lead over the remaining 11 sports betting operators in the state.

The increase in online sports betting handle in August was partly due to the resumption of a few regular-season college football games and preseason NFL football action. Compared to the $188.0 million wagered in July, there was a 2.3% rise in betting activity.

August total pushes Michigan over $2 billion wagered in 2021

This year in Michigan, the total amount of sports wagers, when combined with sports bets at Detroit casinos, has exceeded $2 billion.

When August’s online purchases were added to the sports bets placed at the downtown Detroit casinos, the total amount for the year reached $2.07 billion.

From January 22 to August, a total of $1.88 billion in sports bets have been made through mobile platforms in Michigan. Notably, Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino have collectively received $187.1 million in sports bets during this period.

During the month of August, online sports betting operators in Michigan made significant contributions to state taxes and payments, amounting to $540,706. Additionally, they also paid $216,699 in taxes and fees to the city of Detroit.

Caesars up, Barstool down as football kicks off

After rebranding from William Hill in early August, Caesars Sportsbook experienced a significant boost. The book’s handle increased by 32.9% from July, reaching $10.0 million and securing the fifth position.

Barstool Sportsbook remained relatively stable, securing $13.1 million in sports bets and ranking fourth in the market. It experienced a minor decline of only 3.6% compared to July. Although Barstool had shown a slight increase in market share in July, it regressed in August, slipping from 7.2% to 6.8% this month.

As football season gains momentum, we will closely monitor these two brands throughout September.
