Attention Michigan Stoolies, get ready to place your bets! The permanent Barstool Sportsbook at Greektown Casino in Detroit will be opening on Wednesday night, as confirmed by a news release from Penn National Gaming, the parent company.

The book, which will replace the temporary sportsbook that opened on March 11, is situated in the center of the casino floor.

Due to the pandemic, Greektown had to close its doors for the second time on November 18. However, the casino recently made an announcement stating that it will be reopening on Thursday, Christmas Eve. It is important to note that the sportsbook may open a day earlier, on December 23, if it receives the necessary regulatory approval.

Playinmichigan was informed by Penn National that the casino is set to reopen on Wednesday night at 9 p.m., along with the introduction of the new sportsbook.

John Drake, vice president and general manager at Greektown, expressed his excitement for the opening of our new Barstool Sportsbook. He stated that the design perfectly captures the essence of the Barstool Sports brand, delivering an exceptional sports wagering experience that we believe our customers will truly appreciate.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced last week that Detroit’s casinos may commence their operations this week, subject to specific limitations. We anticipate receiving comprehensive instructions from the Michigan Gaming Control Board during this week.

Barstool Sportsbook in final stages of construction

Throughout this week, Greektown has been playfully hinting at the ongoing construction of the sportsbook via its Twitter account. In a video unveiled on Tuesday afternoon, the sportsbook is showcased, seemingly nearing its final stages of development.

This is how the new space was described in the release from PNG.

The establishment boasts an enchanting entrance, a dedicated sports viewing zone, and a dining area. It also includes a prominent betting counter with extensive odds boards, multiple sports betting kiosks, and ticket writer stations to accommodate a wide range of sports wagering choices for customers. Visitors will relish a top-notch wagering experience, conveniently located near dining facilities, and numerous televisions broadcasting sports events from all over the globe.

Greektown sportsbook third betting option in Detroit

The presence of the Barstool sportsbook in Detroit casinos will mark its establishment as the third permanent venue, alongside the BetMGM Sports Lounge at MGM Grand Detroit and the FanDuel Sportsbook at MotorCity Casino.

Drake expressed his anticipation for the opening of our new Barstool Sportsbook, eagerly awaited by the passionate sports fans in Detroit and across Michigan. He enthusiastically stated that we are excited to welcome them once the casino reopens on Wednesday evening.

Greektown has secured the third position among the Detroit casinos in terms of sports betting since its launch. With a total of $25 million in sports wagers through November, Greektown holds 20.6% of the market share. In 2020, Detroit’s casinos collectively accumulated over $121 million in sports betting wagers. However, sports betting activities will not resume at the casinos until Wednesday when MGM and MotorCity reopen.

According to the MGCB, Michigan is set to introduce online sports betting and online casinos in the near future, most likely by mid-January. Barstool has expressed its intention to be among the platforms ready for Michigan’s launch. Penn Sports Interactive was recently granted provisional licensing by the MGCB, along with 14 other companies.

This week, Penn National made an announcement that it will open Barstool Sportsbook locations in Indiana. The first location will be at Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg on Wednesday, followed by Ameristar East Chicago Casino & Hotel on Thursday.
