Hollywood Casino at Greektown history

In 1996, Michigan voters granted approval for the establishment of three non-tribal commercial casinos in Detroit through a proposed initiative.

The year 1997 witnessed the passing of the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act, which granted permission for the establishment of three licensed casinos in Detroit.

In July 1999, the MGM Grand Detroit was inaugurated, followed by the MotorCity Casino Hotel which opened its doors in December of the same year.

The third commercial casino license was granted to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians along with a consortium of investors possessing a 10% stake in the enterprise.

On November 10, 2000, the tribe introduced Greektown Casino-Hotel, Detroit’s third commercial casino establishment. Situated in the Greektown Historic District on Monroe Street, the casino was established within a building that was initially used as a fur processing center by fur trapper Traugott Schmidt. Prior to its transformation, the structure had served as the Trapper’s Alley mall since 1985.

Hotel and casino expansion

The year 2007 witnessed the grand opening of a hotel with 400 rooms and a 13-story parking garage, conveniently located adjacent to the casino. The following year, in 2008, the casino expanded its floor space over Lafayette Street, resulting in a total area of 100,000 square feet.

One year later, a convention space measuring 20,000 square feet and a grand ballroom spanning 4,000 square feet were constructed.

In May 2008, Greektown Casino LLC, the parent company, sought protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to various financial and logistical challenges, primarily related to parking. Since its establishment, the property had consistently struggled to achieve its financial targets, experiencing a decline of 4.6% in revenue at the time.

On the other hand, a financial consulting firm involved in the bankruptcy case affirmed that the casino was a thriving and lucrative enterprise, utilizing Chapter 11 for the purpose of reorganizing its operations.

The casino remained in regular operation.

In 2010, Greektown Casino-Hotel successfully emerged from bankruptcy protection, with full ownership being taken over by Greektown Superholdings Inc. and its subsidiary Greektown Newco Sub Inc.

Jack Detroit Casino-Hotel?

In 2013, Rock Gaming, which is a partnership between Caesars Entertainment and Dan Gilbert, the founder of Quicken Loans and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, obtained a controlling stake.

Jack Entertainment, formerly known as Rock Gaming, underwent a transformation by altering the names of its various casino properties. One such property, the Greektown Casino-Hotel, was initially intended to be renamed as Jack Detroit Casino-Hotel in 2016. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, these plans were postponed and ultimately abandoned.

Greektown Casino-Hotel was acquired in 2018 by Penn National Gaming and VICI Properties for a cash sum of $1 billion, as part of their agreement.

The land and real estate assets were acquired by VICI Properties for a total of $700 million. In a separate deal, Penn National Gaming paid Jack Entertainment $300 million to assume control of operations. Additionally, Penn National Gaming entered into a lease agreement with VICI Properties, agreeing to pay $55.6 million annually for the use of the property.

Hollywood Casino at Greektown officially replaced Greektown Casino-Hotel on May 1, 2024.
