Michigan Lottery: More Powerball, Lucky For Life Drawings; $4M Won On Dearborn Scratcher
More multi-state lottery drawings, including Powerball, are coming to Michigan this summer.
The popular match-five plus bonus ball game is adding a third weekly drawing next month, the Michigan Lottery confirmed to Playinmichigan. Lucky For Life is moving to daily drawings next week.
Reportedly starting Aug. 23, players will have three chances to win Powerball each week, as a Monday drawing is being added to the current Wednesday and Saturday schedule.
Beginning this Monday (July 19), the twice-weekly Lucky For Life drawings will become a daily offering in Michigan.
More drawings for games such as Powerball could further boost Michigan Lottery players, who had frequent strokes of $1-million luck in the first half of 2021. Multi-state drawings were part of that success.
And just Thursday, the Michigan Lottery released information about a New York resident who won big recently in metro Detroit on an instant game.
However, winning big on these games remains an extreme long shot.
Powerball: More drawings coming in August
Powerball made an official announcement on the changes on Aug. 2.
There’s also additional Double Play, an extra $1 chance to win a lesser prize that’s being added to the game on Aug. 23.
Powerball jackpots begin at $20 million and get larger when they go unclaimed.
Lucky For Life moving to daily drawing
The Lucky For Life drawing Thursday night will be the final time the game is a non-daily affair.
Starting Monday, the $2 game will be available to Michigan residents, and 21 other states plus Washington D.C., each day.
In the game, players choose their first five numbers from a pool of 48 and another Lucky Ball number from a separate pool of 18.
Earlier this year, a Michigan resident won the Lucky For Life jackpot for the first time in the game’s history.
The jackpot gives winners $1,000 a day for the rest of their lives, paid out in yearly $365,000 installments (or a one-time lump sum of $5.75 million).
That ticket was sold online on Feb. 11 to a Detroit player. Another Lucky For Life jackpot was won on March 11, sold online to a player in Grand Rapids.
New York man had to pinch himself after $4M win
An out-of-state visitor is the latest to claim a Michigan top prize, scoring a $4 million prize in instant game Worth Millions.
The 26-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous, bought the winning ticket at United II Liquor, at 7551 Wyoming St. in Dearborn.
He purchased a $30 ticket and told lottery officials that he gave his ticket to a friend to get it checked at a store. The man said he freaked out and had to pinch himself.
The player received a one-time lump sum payment of $2.5 million and said he plans to save his winnings.
Michigan Lottery has reported 34 players who have won $1 million or more this year, good for a record pace.
It’s worth noting, though, that the odds are still slim for hitting it big. For Powerball, there is a 1 in 292.2 million chance of winning the jackpot.
At Lucky For Life, the $1,000 per day grand prize has a 1 in 30,821,472 chance.
