Rothstein not impressed with Big Ten

The underwhelming performance of the Big Ten Conference was a major highlight in last weekend’s NCAA Tournament action.

Out of all the conferences, Purdue and Michigan were the only teams that survived into the Sweet 16, despite the former having the most bids with nine in March Madness.

Despite the Big Ten Conference receiving nine additional bids, only Michigan managed to advance to the second weekend in 2021, creating a familiar scenario.

“The Big Ten’s performance is quite disappointing,” expressed Rothstein. “With a total of eighteen bids in the past two NCAA tournaments, it’s disheartening to see only three appearances in the Sweet 16. The truth remains undeniable: it has been a staggering 22 years since the Big Ten last clinched a national championship. The quantity of teams in the NCAA Tournament becomes irrelevant when the ultimate goal is to secure victories.”

On Thursday night, the Michigan Wolverines, considered underdogs, face off against Villanova in a South Regional semifinal. Despite their low 11 seed ranking, Rothstein believes that the Wolverines are performing exceptionally well, resembling the team that was once considered a strong contender for the preseason title.

“The team we witnessed in the final month of the season had the capability to achieve this. When we played against Colorado State, it was evident that Eli Brooks and Hunter Dickinson, who were instrumental in last year’s Elite Eight run, were outstanding. Additionally, our victory over Tennessee showcased great teamwork. Therefore, I am not astonished by the outcome,” he expressed. “I believed that Michigan had the potential to excel in this bracket. Although they may not possess a renowned name, they resemble a Cinderella team, much like UCLA did last year.”

What to look for this weekend

There have been numerous upsets in the ongoing 2024 NCAA Tournament, making it quite a thrilling and unpredictable event.

Rothstein has been pleasantly surprised by a pair of ACC underdogs among the remaining field.

Rothstein expressed his belief that North Carolina’s quartet reaching its peak is a significant development. He emphasized that North Carolina’s core four players, including Love, Davis, Manek, and Bacot, have the ability to compete with any other core four in college basketball. This was evident when they won against Duke. Rothstein also highlighted the impressive performance of Miami’s guards in the NCAA Tournament, with 32 assists and only seven turnovers in two games. He attributed this success to their small-ball lineup.

During the regional finals weekend, Rothstein’s expectations align with what we witnessed last week.

He stated, “I anticipate chaos and I will continue to use this illustration. Take a look at the current four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Arizona found themselves in a precarious situation, similar to being at the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and two strikes, yet they managed to emerge victorious against TCU. Kansas narrowly escaped defeat against a Creighton team that was missing two key players. Baylor suffered a loss against Carolina, and Gonzaga faced a real scare from Memphis before mounting a comeback. Hence, I foresee more fiercely contested games and a significant amount of unpredictability.”
