Michigan Online Casinos Bounce Back In July, Sports Betting Handle Falls To 2022 Low

Written By Playinmichigan Staff on August 18, 2022Last Updated on August 19, 2022

Michigan sportsbooks saw a new low for the year in July 2022, reporting a total handle of $225 million. While a 23.1% decrease from June, it’s still a 9.1% increase from July of 2021.

Michigan online casinos and Michigan online poker saw a small spike in revenue from last month. Internet gaming generated $126.6 million in revenue, up 4.2% from the $121.5 million generated in June.

“The month-to-month increase in online casino revenue in the middle of the summer is just another indicator of how strong the industry is in Michigan,” Playinmichigan lead analyst Paul Costanzo said. “It’s again making up for the dip in sports betting, as July simply lacks the major sporting events that bring in sports bettors. Still, it’s an increase over July 2021, which is the lowest full month on record in Michigan.”

Top takeaways from July 2022 Michigan online gambling numbers

Encouraging year-to-year growth

The $126.6 million in iGaming revenue certainly isn’t Earth-shattering, but it continues to highlight the growth from July of last year.

A year ago, online casinos generated just $92.2 million in revenue, which was the third-lowest month of the year (excluding January 2021, which began mid-month).

July’s 2022 revenue ranks fourth for the year in terms of highest-revenue months, less than $1 million behind May’s $127.4 million.

The percentage growth year-over-year remains steady, as each month in 2022 has been at least 34% higher in revenue than the year before.

  • February: 54.1% growth from 2021
  • March: 38.5% growth from 2021
  • April: 39.5% growth from 2021
  • May: 34.2% growth from 2021
  • June: 36.2% growth from 2021
  • July: 37.2% growth from 2021

Michigan sports bettors take a hit

Michigan sports bettors fell back to reality a bit in July. After improving to a 5.4% hold for the sportsbooks in June, the books collected a 10.2% hold in July.

The online hold was 10.5%, with four different operators collecting a hold in the double digits. The 10.2% overall hold is the highest for the sportsbooks in Michigan since November of 2021, where it collected 11.7% of the handle.

It’s also the fourth-highest hold for the books since online sports betting launched in January of 2021.

Three-book race heading into football season

Since online sports betting launched, it’s been pretty well a three-operator battle for the top.

Fanduel Sportsbook MI, BetMGM Michigan and DraftKings Sportsbook MI have always found themselves above the rest of the field.

FanDuel has created slight separation from the others up top, holding 28% of the all-time online handle share in Michigan ($1.75 billion), but the three are definitely in a category to themselves. DraftKings holds 25% ($1.56 billion), while BetMGM has 23% ($1.41 billion).

In July, FanDuel held 29% of the online handle share at $60.1 million. DraftKings was a narrow second at 28% ($57.5 million), while BetMGM came in third at 22% ($44.6 million).

As NFL and college football are set to begin in the coming weeks, expect these three to look to make a move to get past the other two.

Last football season, it was DraftKings that made its presence felt, winning the handle share in August, September, November and December.
