Lions vs. Eagles NFL Week 1 Player Prop Odds, Betting Promotions At Michigan Sportsbooks

The Detroit Lions enter the 2022 NFL Season with a lot of optimism.

But, that optimism will be tested quickly when they host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

The focus of Michigan sports bettors for this game should be squarely on both teams’ quarterbacks.

Can Jared Goff build off his preseason hype? Will Jalen Hurts manage to use his legs to carve up Detroit?

Lions vs. Eagles NFL Week 1 Odds

Despite the growing support for the Lions in many NFL futures markets, Detroit is still an underdog at home in the opener.

Most sportsbooks have the Lions as a 4-point underdog to Philly. The over/under total is holding pretty steady at 48.5 points.

Detroit Lions betting trends

Even though the Lions were just 3-13-1 overall in 2021, they were one of the stronger teams against the spread. Detroit was 11-6 ATS a year ago, which was the fourth-best record in the league.

Conversely, Philadelphia was just 8-9-1 ATS with a 9-9 overall record including the playoff loss to Tampa Bay.

When it comes to the total, the Lions trended with the under in 2021. Detroit went under the projected total in 10 of 17 games. The Eagles went over the total in 10 of their 18 games.

Lions vs. Eagles history

The Lions have won and covered in three of the last four against Philly. However, the Eagles won the last meeting in 2021, 44-6 at Ford Field. Philadelphia was just a 3-point favorite entering kickoff.

The over has been the play when these two collide, as it has hit in eight straight meetings.

Lions vs. Eagles Prop Odds: Jared Goff Completions

The Lions have a lot of optimism to take a big step forward in 2022. In order for that to happen, Goff has to take strides from his 2021 performance.

Over 14 games, Goff threw for 3,245 yards and 19 touchdowns with eight interceptions. While completing 67.2% of his passes, his average yardage per attempt was just 6.6 yards.

Under new offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, the Lions look set to rely on the run game to setup play-action passing.

Dan Campbell seemed to settle into running an offense that fits Goff’s style more toward the end of 2021. Not known for a strong arm, expect more of a short-yardage pass game once again in 2022. That likely means quantity over quality when it comes to completions for Goff.

The latest Detroit Lions odds have Goff with an over/under of 23.5 completions for Sunday, according to DraftKings Sportsbook MI. The over sits at -105, while the under is listed at -125.

On Sunday, he faces an Eagles’ defense that was 11th in the NFL in pass defense (220.9 ypg). Leading the unit is former Lion, Darius Slay.

“Detroit’s offense is finally ready to be unveiled against the Eagles. A familiar foe will be standing on the opposite sideline, as veteran Darius Slay has had a knack for making plays against Detroit. Goff will have the benefit of several additional weapons. With an emphasis on the run game still a focus, I would expect Goff to complete 20-23 passes against the Eagles. If he is required to sling the football all over the field, the team will be likely trailing in the opener, said John Maakaron of All Lions.

In last year’s loss to Philly, Goff completed 25 of 34 passes for 222 yards. The team was trailing most of the contest, forcing Goff to have to throw the ball more than Detroit would probably prefer.

When Detroit won in 2021, Goff completed 21 passes in two of the victories and 25 in the other. Altogether, Goff completed at least 24 passes in seven of his 14 games that he played.

Lions vs. Eagles Prop Odds: Jalen Hurts Rushing Yards

A clear weakness in the past year for the Lions has been containing rushing quarterbacks.

That will be tested right away in the 2022 season with trying to contain Jalen Hurts.

Hurts rushed for 71 yards on seven attempts in the 2021 meeting while having to throw just 14 passes.

The Lions also gave up 58 rushing yards to Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson last season, and 59 yards to Atlanta’s Desmond Ridder in the preseason opener.

Fanduel  Sportsbook MI lists Hurts with an over/under of 46.5 rushing yards in Sunday’s game. They also list him as the biggest favorite to score a TD (non-passing). Hurts is at +115 to score a TD in Sunday’s game.

Detroit will need strong containment from their defensive front to keep Hurts from picking up big yards on the ground like he did in 2021.

“While Detroit may not have a mobile quarterback to simulate Jalen Hurts, the coaching staff will prepare the team to attempt to limit his production. With an improved defensive line, keeping Hurts in the pocket must be the focus. I expect Hurts to record less than 70 yards rushing against Detroit’s defense, as Aidan Hutchinson, Charles Harris, Alim McNeill and Austin Bryant will be battling to limit his productivity on Sunday,” Maakaron said.

In 2021, Hurts had nine games with at least 47 rushing yards and three with at least 70.
