Beginning in 2014, the Michigan Lottery has been awarding the Excellence In Education Award on a weekly basis to a deserving educator from Michigan.

The winners of each week’s competition will be awarded a commemorative plaque, a cash prize of $1,500, a grant of $500 for their school or district, and will also be showcased in news segments aired by the lottery’s media partner stations: WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, and WNEM-TV in Saginaw.

In addition to choosing weekly winners, the lottery also designates one exceptional individual as the Educator of the Year, who is rewarded with a generous cash prize of $10,000.

The Michigan Lottery bestows a total of $88,000 to deserving educators throughout the year via the Excellence In Education Award. Additionally, schools receive an additional $26,000 in grants.

The latest winner

Mark Eberhard has recently been honored with the Excellence In Education Award.

In addition to being a freshman biology teacher at St. Clair High School, Eberhard goes above and beyond like many other teachers, extending his contributions beyond the classroom.

For over thirty years, Eberhard has been recognized as an exceptional educator by a former principal at St. Clair High School who nominated him for this distinction.

According to the former principal, he not only teaches a wide range of biology classes, including ninth grade and advanced placement, but he also demonstrates exceptional proficiency in two additional areas that have greatly benefited numerous students, allowing them to flourish.

Over the past three decades, he has been at the forefront of two critical domains: student leadership and theatre. In his role, he has successfully guided a student government consisting of over 100 students annually, actively shaping programs that hold significance for every individual within the school community.

Eberhard is also recognized by the principal for revitalizing the theater program at St. Clair. The sponsor mentioned that Eberhard’s efforts led to a surge in interest for theater, as well as increased support from parents and the community. This ultimately led to the establishment of a state-of-the-art Fine Arts Building in 2002, valued at $7.2 million.
