On Thursday, Northville Downs reopened for simulcast horse racing betting after a closure lasting almost five months.

Due to the widespread outbreak of the coronavirus, the sole remaining horse racing track in Michigan had remained shut down since March 16.

According to the track website, the 2020 live racing season will kick off on August 14th, featuring races every Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. This opening date marks the start of a series of 18 racing dates, all scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays, spanning until October 10th.

All the race days of the season’s initial 28 were canceled during the shutdown.

According to operations manager Mike Carlo, the regulars showed up in full force for Thursday’s simulcast opening, as reported by Playinmichigan.

Carlo sent a text message saying, “Continuing from where we left off.”

No summer break: Live racing opener coming soon

Carlo informed Playinmichigan that Northville Downs would commence live racing as soon as possible in order to compensate for the time lost, despite originally planning to take a summer break during July and August prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced last week that Northville Downs would be allowed to reopen this week.

On Wednesday, Northville Downs received the green light to reopen as part of an executive order that permitted the reopening of Detroit’s three commercial casinos.

15% capacity, mask requirements among guidelines

Guidelines for the reopening were outlined by Richard Kalm, who serves as both the executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board and the horse racing commissioner.

The following were included:

  • Employees must wear face masks at all times and should regularly change their masks and gloves.
  • The daily entry screening procedures consist of a questionnaire and temperature screening.
  • Employees must wash their hands every 60 minutes.
  • The maximum capacity allowed is 896 persons, which represents a 15% capacity rate. Additionally, 100 tables, 500 chairs, and 200 televisions will be removed.
  • There are plexiglass shields installed at each teller and customer service desk.
  • There are also some extra prerequisites for the barns, track, and other outdoor spaces.

Northville Downs announced on its Facebook page that it would be undergoing an inspection this week in preparation for its upcoming reopening.

On Thursday, the track commenced its operations for dining and simulcast betting at 11 a.m. Moving forward, the track will be accessible every day of the week, starting from 11 a.m. and staying open until around midnight.

TVG only operator up and running for horse betting apps

Residents of Michigan are no longer required to visit Northville Downs in order to place official horse racing wagers.

In December, Whitmer signed expanded gambling laws that included advance-deposit wagering for horse racing, along with the introduction of sports betting to Michigan.

Carlo has been approached by multiple companies regarding the acquisition of licenses.

Up until now, only TVG Horse Betting has been authorized as the online vendor for horse racing bets. However, in late June, the FanDuel Group platform was launched in Michigan.

Carlo has mentioned that platforms such as TwinSpires, Xpressbet, and NYRA Bets might become available in Michigan in the near future.
