For over a year now, Bryan Lofton has been engaging in online betting despite residing in west Michigan.

The 43-year-old resident of Holland has been making a round trip of approximately 90 minutes, 2-4 times per month, to visit a gas station located just across the Indiana state line for the purpose of placing bets.

The state has fostered a strong gambling culture over the years, evident from the flourishing lottery and widespread presence of casinos. However, since March, the buzz surrounding sports bets has taken over conversations across the state.

For some individuals, the wait for online gambling in Michigan has become even more challenging. Despite Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s signing of expanded gambling laws over a year ago, the progress has been slow at times.

Therefore, Lofton makes weekly trips to Indiana to take advantage of the active online sports betting scene.

In an email to Playinmichigan, Lofton expressed his extreme frustration with Michigan legislation.

There is absolutely no logical explanation for why this should have taken longer than 12 months.

After a long wait, sports betting, online casinos, and online poker are set to make their much-anticipated debut in early 2021. Stay tuned for our live updates to stay informed on the latest developments throughout this eventful year.

Reasons for online gambling stalls: Reasonable or ridiculous?

Depending on one’s perspective, the reasons for the delays in Michigan’s online gambling can be viewed as either rational or absurd.

The initial impact of the pandemic was that it necessitated Michigan Gaming Control Board staff members to transition to remote work, thereby introducing added challenges.

There was a time when the MGCB had difficulty completing background checks due to the FBI’s failure to process the required fingerprints.

The passing of the sports betting and internet gaming rules faced an additional delay during the later stages of the legislative process. The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, a bipartisan committee, received the rules on Oct. 8 but did not progress them until Dec. 1, despite no modifications being made.

This leads us to the broader context of the year 2020 in Lansing. During this time, there were anti-Whitmer rallies and, as a result, a plot emerged to kidnap the governor. Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled legislature engaged in a battle with the governor over pandemic restrictions.

The MGCB anticipates the launch of online gambling in mid-January, with the majority of obstacles now overcome.

Is it reasonable? Is it ridiculous? Or is it simply a symptom of the seemingly endless year we’ve endured?

Lansing issues loom as a source of frustration

Cooperation was not prioritized in the state capitol environment mentioned earlier this year. Regardless of political affiliations, one can easily attribute government problems to the opposition.

Nick, a resident of Ferndale who preferred to keep his last name private, expressed his belief that Whitmer was being unfairly blamed as the primary scapegoat.

Nick, who hails from a place other than Michigan, expressed that the absence of an emergency order specifically categorizing online gambling as a priority, hindered the progress.

“Nick stated that Gretchen’s unwillingness to authorize emergency action puts her at the top of his list of people to blame.”

If online gambling and sports betting had been permitted, they could have been operational by now, enabling residents to place bets on football games right from their homes.

Republican state lawmakers in the spring urged Whitmer and the MGCB to implement emergency rules to expedite the process. However, stakeholders were informed by the governor’s office in May that the issue did not meet the criteria for emergency rulemaking.

In the meantime, retail betting has remained the sole choice (when casinos are operational). Nick expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the time-consuming process of placing bets at crowded periods in Detroit casinos.

On a specific NFL Sunday, Nick showed up at 11:45 a.m., however, he didn’t place his bets until 1:15 p.m. Unlike online sports betting, there is no wait time involved.

COVID-19 created difficult situation for online gambling

Our @Play_Michigan account on Twitter frequently updates users with unfortunate news regarding delays. Commenters promptly express their frustrations with the situation.

However, the frustrated voices are not the sole ones present. Indeed, 2020 proved to be a tumultuous year with numerous setbacks including canceled sports seasons, postponed events, the closure of restaurants and casinos, implementation of curfews, and social unrest. The list of challenges goes on.

At 37 years old, Benjamin Hyde from Kalamazoo expressed his frustration, yet he remains uncertain about assigning blame or determining if there is indeed a specific target to hold responsible.

“I really can’t say for certain,” he responded. “I realize that recent events, like the ongoing COVID situation, may have diminished its priority.”

Honestly, it pains us to admit, but a significant portion of the highs and lows experienced in 2020 were beyond Michigan’s influence. The cancellation of March Madness and the prolonged closure of casinos due to COVID-19 were unforeseen events that caught everyone off guard.

Online or not, just bet responsibly

Joe Beaudette, a 51-year-old resident of Flint, intends to exclusively place bets online, with a primary focus on the NBA. While he has previously utilized various betting platforms, Joe now plans to primarily engage with sites like FanDuel Sportsbook for his future betting activities.

Actually, he has already registered for an account.

His response to fellow Michiganders when asked what he would say to them was straightforward: “Please gamble responsibly.”

Hyde, too, expressed agreement with those thoughts.

“Always ensure responsible behavior,” he advised. “If you find yourself in a situation where you lack disposable income, refrain from indulging. While it may be enjoyable, it is crucial to stay within your financial limits.”

Please remain patient as online betting will be available in just a few weeks. It has been a lengthy year and a considerable wait, but the wait is almost over.
