The majority of poker players recognize the importance of having patience. In other words, they understand that it is unwise to participate in every single hand. By folding unfavorable hands and patiently waiting for better opportunities, you enhance your likelihood of achieving success.

The recent launch of legal online casinos and sportsbooks in Michigan has generated considerable excitement. However, poker players will have to exercise a bit more patience as they eagerly anticipate the commencement of the first legal online poker rooms and the dealing of hands.

First Michigan online poker sites due soon

In Michigan, last Friday witnessed the launch of an impressive number of 10 new online gambling sites and apps. With the exception of two, all of them offer a combination of online casino games and sports betting. Nevertheless, online poker is still awaiting its legal introduction in the Wolverine State.

It was not surprising. Prior to last Friday, there were signs suggesting that online casinos and sportsbooks would be operational from the beginning, but it was anticipated that the first online poker rooms would take a few additional days to launch.

However, poker is on its way… and it’s likely to happen soon. The necessary elements are almost ready, if not entirely finalized.

Conditional approvals were granted by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) to BetMGM and PokerStars in early December. This signifies that these well-known poker brands are likely to be the pioneers in launching online poker rooms in Michigan. The anticipated timeline suggests that the first rooms could become operational within a matter of days or a few weeks.

Just three days prior to Friday’s online launch, the MGCB confirmed the approval of online poker. However, among the operators planning to launch poker, only BetMGM received approval for both online gaming and sports betting. While online gaming encompasses poker, BetMGM has yet to announce a specific date for the launch of its site.

Legal online gambling is here; unlicensed sites remain a risk

While waiting, online poker players in Michigan may feel enticed to engage in games on unlicensed or unregulated platforms outside the state.

Despite the legality and availability of online gambling in Michigan, it is important for players to understand that unlicensed and unregulated online poker sites are not legal. These sites still operate in violation of Michigan’s gambling laws.

The Venom, a well-known multi-day tournament, was recently launched by the Winning Poker Network (WPN) on Friday. Among the various skins offered by WPN, Americas Cardroom stands out as the most favored.

The tournament has a buy-in of $2,650 and offers multiple starting flights. With a massive guaranteed prize pool of $8 million, it is expected to attract around 4,000 entries, possibly even surpassing this number. If it does reach that milestone, the prize pool would soar to $10 million.

This would establish a new milestone for WPN, making it the biggest online poker tournament on a US player-focused site in almost ten years.

However, since “Black Friday,” which occurred on April 15, 2011, there has been a lack of significant competition for this record. On that day, the largest worldwide online poker platforms ceased operations in the United States following the unsealing of indictments and civil complaints by the U.S. Department of Justice against them.

Since then, online platforms that cater to US players, such as Americas Cardroom, have been operating with the possibility of encountering comparable legal consequences. It is worth noting that players in Michigan should be aware that the WPN decided to cease its operations in Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware subsequent to the legalization of online poker in each of those states.

Playing on legal sites ensures protections for players

Michigan players who engage in online gambling on WPN sites and other unlicensed or unregulated platforms are exposed to risks. These players lack the safeguards provided by the state’s legal framework, leaving them vulnerable to potential issues regarding the security of their funds or the trustworthiness of the sites, with no means of recourse.

In contrast, when playing on licensed and legal online poker sites in Michigan, players can be confident that these sites will comply with the regulations and standards established by the MGCB. These rules guarantee the protection of players’ funds and ensure fair gameplay.

Both BetMGM Poker and PokerStars, upon obtaining a Michigan online gambling license, are required to adhere to the account security and safety regulations set forth by the state of Michigan.

To put it differently, it would be wise for poker players in Michigan to remain patient and stay vigilant for the upcoming introduction of the initial legally-operating online platforms.

Keep following Playinmichigan for updates on when the sites will start dealing cards. Hopefully, there will be hands to play very soon.
