There is now a third choice available for online poker players in Michigan.

The launch of World Series of Poker Michigan took place on Monday, March 28 at 10 a.m. WSOP.com has now joined BetMGM Poker MI and PokerStars Michigan as additional online poker options available.

In mid-July 2021, WSOP’s software provider, 888 Holdings PLC, introduced the product in Pennsylvania.

Due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on live poker events, WSOP has responded by incorporating a greater number of online bracelet events into their schedule.

Will WSOP.com MI players be able to compete across state lines?

The introduction of WSOP in Michigan will occur prior to the state’s participation in the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement. This agreement permits players to engage in cross-state competitions. The Michigan Gaming Control Board has indicated that the delay is contingent on the acceptance of Michigan by other states such as Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey.

The board had previously stated its anticipation of finalizing a compact by the end of 2021, but unfortunately, that did not come to fruition. Nevertheless, the MGCB recently shared a document titled “Multistate Internet Poker Potential Tasks and Considerations for Operators and Platform Providers.”

Mary Kay Bean, Communications Specialist of the MGCB, stated that they have not yet been notified by the current compact states about the status of their application. The agency has released guidelines on multistate internet poker for operators and providers to assist them in preparing for potential multistate poker competition in the future. For instance, operators and providers may consider focusing on developing internal controls at present.

Michigan players will gain access to competitions like the WSOP Online Circuit once the state becomes a member of the MSIGA.

During July 1-August 1, 2021, WSOP organized 33 Online Bracelet Series events in New Jersey and Nevada, awarding over $18.2 million in prizes.

This year, the WSOP Online Bracelet Series will commence on June 5 and extend until July 17. There is optimism that players from Michigan will have the opportunity to participate in the events this time.

Caesars’ purchase of William Hill paved way for WSOP Michigan

WSOP is under the ownership of Caesars, and the recent acquisition of William Hill by the gambling brand provides an opportunity for WSOP to venture into the online market. This opportunity arises from William Hill’s existing agreement with the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, who operate two casinos in the Traverse City area, granting William Hill access to this market.

PokerStars MI made history on January 29, 2021, by becoming the inaugural regulated online poker site in Michigan, following the launch of online gambling on January 22. It’s worth noting that the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) does not distinguish poker revenue from the overall revenue generated by online casinos in their reports.

Michigan’s internet gaming industry is experiencing a significant boom, generating a staggering amount of revenue in the past six months. With a total of $1.4 billion in revenue as of February, the state has joined the ranks of national leaders such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
