Michigan OKs New Coin Toss, NFL Trade Markets Right Before Super Bowl 55
Close to Super Bowl LV kickoff, the Michigan Gaming Control Board cleared the way for some new Super Bowl prop bet markets throughout the state.
As of Thursday, it is now legal for operators to offer markets such as which team will win the coin toss and what will the coin toss call be, and what the coin toss winner will decide to do in advance of Sunday’s game.
Michigan sports bettors could previously already wager on whether the coin toss will be heads or tails.
Other markets added Thursday include NFL roster decisions and season trades. However, the color of the post-game Gatorade shower was listed as a pending market before but is no longer there. The market was proposed by an operator and not approved by the MGCB.
For comparison, the Indiana Gaming Commission allowed props that are prohibited in Michigan, including the Gatorade shower color, who the Super Bowl MVP will thank first, whether or not player X will retire after the game, and will there be a flea-flicker.
MI sportsbooks add Super Bowl 55 coin toss bets
The MGCB news and updated prop bet options, sportsbooks in Michigan were quick to expand their offerings. On Friday, BetMGM Michigan had the most coin toss markets added.
In addition to the -105 odds on both sides of the heads or tails outcome, which was already up this week, the operator added the other three bets to its offerings.
The markets were:
- Which team will win the coin toss? (-105 on each)
- What will the call for the coin toss be? (-110 on each)
- What will be the decision of the coin toss winner? (Receive opening kickoff, +375; defer option to second half, -500)
BetMGM bettors can also parlay whether each team will win the toss with whether each team will win or lose the game for four additional markets.
DraftKings, William Hill add coin toss winner market
DraftKings Sportsbook added the coin toss winner to its selections, placing -106 juice on Kansas City and Tampa Bay. Heads and tails were offered on a separate bet at -103 on both sides.
William Hill Sportsbook also now offers a market on which team would win the toss, in addition to whether it would be heads or tails, which was already up this week. Both sides of both bets were being offered with -101 odds.

Only ‘season trades’ allowed for NFL
Michigan operators missed out on trade markets in advance of the Detroit Lions trading Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams over the weekend.
Colorado was one state that offered a Stafford market in the lead-up to the trade. Three operators didn’t have the Rams in their top-five teams, while BetMGM had them sixth at +700.
The season trades stipulation added Thursday only apply to deals made during the season, MGCB spokesperson Mary Kay Bean confirmed to Playinmichigan.
So even now, the Stafford markets could not be offered in Michigan.
More betting leagues added in other sports
The football changes weren’t the only ones added to the menu for Michigan sports betting fans.
New rugby leagues are now available for markets here, including Rugby Football League, Australian Rugby League Commission, New Zealand Rugby League, Four Nations Rugby, and Challenge Cup (UK) Rugby.
The MGCB added 21 soccer leagues to the markets, including Brazil Serie A and B, Argentina Superliga, and the Nigeria Premier League.
International Tennis Federation events were also added to a tennis menu that already included Women’s Tennis Association, Association of Tour Professionals, and grand slam events.
A request has been submitted this week to offer Cornhole League wagers, but it is still pending approval.
