TwinSpires Sportsbook And Casino Will Stop Taking Bets In Michigan On Sept. 6

TwinSpires announced in an email to customers Thursday night that it would be closing its Michigan online casino and sportsbook on Sept. 6.

It gives an end date to the brand’s online gambling arms, six months after it was announced TwinSpires would be leaving the space.

TwinSpires closing sportsbook and casino in Michigan

TwinSpires first announced in February it was moving to close its online casino and sportsbook. It later announced it was ending progressive jackpots as of July 31.

The TwinSpires horse racing website and app, however, will continue to run.

TwinSpires has struggled to gain much market share in Michigan. It’s 10th out of 15 operators in all-time Michigan online sportsbook handle with just over $27 million. With word that the app was soon closing, it comes as little surprise that it came in last each of the past three months.

TwinSpires has fallen to 13th in revenue among Michigan online casinos at $15.3 million all time. It has spent the past six months among the bottom two, including a low of under $400,000 in July.

Cashing out of TwinSpires app

In its email to customers, TwinSpires reps said that casino games will be disabled and no sports wagers or casino games will be available on the site after Sept. 6. Deposits will be disabled Aug. 30. Customers have until Oct. 6 to withdraw money from their account.

The email also outlined the procedure for open bets:

• Any open wagers will be settled as normal once the event has ended and you will receive a check within 30 days of settlement.
• If you have any open bets, the ability to Cash Out will continue to be available on all eligible open bets.
• There is also an opportunity to void bets. Any future wagers that will settle after Sept. 6, 2022 can be canceled by calling Player Services at 877-774-7371.

What new online casino and sportsbook will replace TwinSpires in Michigan?

Island Resort & Casino, which is operated by the Hannahville Indian Community, provides the licenses for TwinSpires. The exit opens the door for another operator to take TwinSpires’ place. And it seems as if that has already been decided. Who it is, however, will not be announced until later.

A representative at Island Resort told Playinmichigan, “We do not have a set launch date but will be announcing our new partner in September!”

Playinmichigan has speculated on a potential replacements, most recently looking at SI Sportsbook. SI has partnered with 888Sport, a well-known brand in Europe that is operating in New Jersey. 888 Atlantic Limited is a licensed supplier in Michigan.

SI is currently available in Virginia and Colorado.

The new Michigan brand could have the opportunity to be a fresh face in the market right in the middle of the busiest sports betting time of the year.
