Why BetMGM Continues To Dominate Michigan’s Online Casino Scene

Written By Drew Ellis on May 25, 2022

Though Michigan online casino players have 15 different options to choose from, it’s clear that BetMGM Michigan has set itself apart from the pack.

During the first 15 months of legalized internet gaming, BetMGM has found the recipe to consistently bring consumers back to their platform.

BetMGM’s dominance atop Michigan online casinos

In no surprise, April 2022 saw BetMGM more than double its nearest competitor in internet gaming revenue.

Its total just under $50 million accounted for nearly 38% of the state’s $132.4 million in revenue.

All-time, BetMGM Michigan has amassed $605.7 million in internet gaming revenue. Its next closest competitors are FanDuel Casino MI ($265.2 million) and DraftKings Casino MI ($264.9 million). Just like April, BetMGM’s all-time revenue accounts for about 37% of the total internet gaming revenue in the state.

The same can be said for tax revenue generated for the state. BetMGM accounts for just under 37% of the state’s all-time tax revenue. It has generated $105.9 million of the state’s total of $290.6 million.

“The Michigan market is one of our largest, but it’s also integral to our past, present, and future successes,” Matthew Sunderland, VP of Gaming at BetMGM said. “For many reasons, including our omnichannel relationship with MGM Grand Detroit, our brand has resonated in Michigan from the moment we entered the market. We’ll continue to see it as a critical factor in our future success.”

Leaders and best in game offerings

BetMGM’s success in Michigan can be spotted with its variety of games.

The online casino has led the state in terms of total game offerings.

At the end of March, BetMGM was offering a total of 532 different games in its online casino platform. Included in that total is:

  • 483 total slots
  • 38 total table games
  • 11 video poker games
  • 5 live-dealer games (included in table game count)

“We emphasize our exclusive game content, both in-house and third party, in what has grown into the industry’s largest portfolio. We produce engaging games leveraging with our parent companies but also look to partner with the best third-party providers to secure exclusive content to add to Entain’s already impressive casino platform,” Sunderland said. “Finally, our live dealer offering through our private, branded studios built in partnership with Evolution is second-to-none. Even when playing at our generic tables, players get a leading iGaming experience and easy access to our full games portfolio.”

BetMGM also leading in biggest payouts

A large selection of games is great, but consumers want their cut of the pie.

BetMGM has been able to reward its players with big jackpots over the past 15 months.

Over the first year of online casinos, BetMGM accounted for the top 3 slot game jackpot payouts, including one over $1 million this past June.

Just this past March, BetMGM Michigan paid out a $2.4 million jackpot for a lucky player on Bison Fury.

“Our jackpot network, the largest exclusive state-by-state in-house progressive network of its kind in the U.S., consistently provides players opportunities at life-changing jackpots,” Sunderland said. “In the past year, we’ve paid out almost $50M in prizes from our in-house games.”

BetMGM named Operator of the Year

BetMGM’s success is felt well outside of Michigan.

Last month, it was named Casino Operator of the Year at the EGR North America Awards. The EGR North America Awards celebrate excellence in North American online gaming.

Based on EGR’s award criteria, Casino Operator of the Year is the online casino operator that has been able to dominate the sector through their global reach and quality of their product.

“It’s an honor to be named EGR’s Casino Operator of the Year, we’re humbled to be recognized by our peers as the industry leader,” Sunderland said. “The award is a testament to our hard work, particularly in 2021, as we solidified our position as the leader in North American iGaming.”

MGM reported that its regional operations saw $891 million in revenue in the first quarter of 2022. That was a 25% increase from a year ago ($711 million). Adjusted Property EBITDAR (Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and restructuring or rent costs) was $313 million. That was a 29% improvement from a year ago ($242 million).
