Detroit Casinos Bring In $1.3 Billion In 2022 Revenue, Down Slightly From 2021

Detroit retail casinos brought in $1.276 billion in gaming and sports betting revenue in 2022, down a little more than 1% from the prior year.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board released December’s retail revenue numbers Tuesday to give a complete look at 2022.

Casino gaming revenue dipped less than 1% year-over-year, while sports betting handle dropped 17.8%.

Detroit casinos report $109.9 million in revenue for December

For December, the three Detroit retail casinos (MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, Hollywood Casino at Greektown) reported $108.3 million in revenue from slots and table games.

That was an 8.4% increase from November’s $99.9 million total and the largest revenue month since April ($116.9 million). However, it was a 2.8% decrease from December 2021’s total of $111.4 million.

When it comes to retail sports betting, the three Detroit casinos recorded $16.1 million in handle for December of 2022. That was an 11.3% drop from November’s mark of $18.1 million. It was also the second-lowest handle month for the year.

Compared to one year ago, when the three casinos recorded $30.1 million in December of 2021, sports betting handle dipped by 46.5%. However, the casinos brought in $1.6 million in revenue this past month, while only bringing in $1.1 million in December of 2021.

Detroit retail casino gaming revenue down less than 1% in 2022

Detroit’s casinos finished up with $1.26 billion in revenue through slots and table games on the year.

Here’s a closer look at some of the figures throughout the year.

When breaking it down by casino, MGM Grand Detroit saw an improvement in 2022 compared to 2021, while MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown had a decrease in revenue.

Detroit retail sportsbooks see 30% revenue decline in 2022

The three Detroit casinos finished with $263.7 million in sports betting handle for 2022. That led to $18.8 million in revenue for the year.

Those are both declines from the previous year. In 2021, the trio had $310.6 million in handle (15.1% drop) and $26.9 million in revenue (30.2% drop).

The largest month for spots betting handle for the three casinos was January ($35.9 million), while August was the lowest ($11 million).
