Island Resort & Casino history

The Hannahville Indian Community experienced a significant transformation with the establishment of the Island Resort and Casino. Previously, the community had endured hardships on tribal lands, lacking basic amenities such as running water, electricity, and transportation. Remarkably, as recently as 1966, the reservation remained devoid of power. Therefore, the subsequent opening of the Hannahville Bingo Hall just 15 years later marked a remarkable shift in fortune for the community.

However, the bingo parlor was merely the tribe’s initial stride towards prominence. Within a mere four years of its opening in 1981, the establishment had expanded into the Hannahville Casino.

However, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 proved to be a game-changer for tribal gaming. This legislation granted federally-recognized tribes the opportunity to engage in negotiations with their respective host states and establish gaming compacts, providing a significant boost to the industry.

Despite Michigan’s governor taking another five years to agree, it was evident that the situation was unavoidable. In 1993, the two parties eventually reached an agreement, but the Hannahville Casino had already undergone changes and was now known as the Chip-in Casino. Furthermore, it had already completed an expansion. Additional expansions would continue, leading to the current version of the casino being established in 1998. To commemorate this achievement, the tribe organized the first show in the Island Showroom.
