Michigan Online Sports Betting Handle August 2021

After a slight uptick in June, the online sports betting handle in Michigan fell in July for the third time in four months.

Michigan’s 13 online sportsbooks took $188.0 million in July sports bets, according to numbers released Monday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. That total represents a drop of 20.0% from June.

Combined with sports betting at Detroit’s trio of casinos, Michiganders wagered $206.3 million in July, down 20.5% from June. The numbers don’t include sports betting totals from the retail portions of the state’s tribal casinos, which do not report revenue to the MGCB.

July is traditionally the bottom of the calendar for sports betting revenue. Now, with splashes of NFL preseason action coming in August, the real interesting numbers will start to come next month.

Michigan online sportsbooks paid $762,220 in state taxes and $377,223 to the city of Detroit from July online sports betting revenue.

Gross revenue was $19.6 million for online sportsbooks, a 10.4% hold of bets. That’s the second straight month for double-digit hold and only the second full month since launch at 10-plus percent.

As for lifetime online handle, Michigan sportsbooks reached $1.687 billion, passing the $1.5 billion mark in the same month Michigan passed its six-month anniversary since the Jan. 22 launch.

FanDuel Sportsbook leads the way for seventh straight month

Make it 7-for-7 (barely) for FanDuel Sportsbook, which has led in online sports betting handle for each monthly report since the Jan. 22 launch.

In July, FanDuel took $54.5 million in Michigan online sports bets, good for a 29.0% share of the Michigan market.

DraftKings Sportsbook was second with $53.4 million in bets (28.4% market share), and BetMGM Sportsbook was third at $41.0 million in handle (21.8% share).

Barstool Sportsbook barely saw an end of a tough streak, as the book actually gained market share for the first time.

Barstool started strong with a 23.9% market share in January’s first 10 days of wagering. But the book has struggled since, dropping to 13.3% in February, 11.0% in March, 9.9% in April, 7.7% in May and 7.1% in June. In July, Barstool took $13.6 million, or 7.2%, of Michigan’s July online sports bets. The total ranked as the fourth-most in the state.

Newcomers FireKeepers makes first splash; Caesars, Play Gun Lake next

FireKeepers Sportsbook took $367,354 in bets (12th of 13 operators) after launching sports betting and an online casino July 12. The brand had a soft launch for some customers before that.

Meanwhile, Caesars Sportsbook hopes to join the group of top Michigan operators soon. William Hill Sportsbook rebranded as Caesars in the first week of August, so July’s bets were still on the WH platform. William Hill was sixth in Michigan with $7.5 million in July online sports bets, accounting for a 4.0% market share.

A 14th sports betting operator, Play Gun Lake Sportsbook, launched Aug. 2 and will be included in next month’s revenue report for the first time.
